This College of Law article is important because it demonstrates that in 2022 despite the fact that according to the NSW Law Society, 54% of the profession are women there are still great disparities. A closer examination shows that less than a third of women lead law firms (29% are partners/principals). By contrast, over half of male solicitors are partners/principals (54%).The remaining 71% of female solicitors are employees, while this figure is only 46% for male solicitors. The Working Culture of many law firms is still underpinned by beliefs and values that do not provide an equal playing field. Let's change it by speaking up whenever will see this disparity in action.

It will come as no surprise to many that 64% of respondents did not think becoming a #solicitor was available to everyone due to a mixture of socio-economic barriers and lack of connections. Granted, there is some element of perception involved here due to what people see on TV which form their opinions of what lawyers look like, how they behave and the privilege they enjoy. Growing up, I was guilty of thinking the law was full of middle-upper class, mostly white, middle-aged, straight men and therefore it was no place for me. Whilst things have improved somewhat, there remain too many barriers to achieving true diversity in the legal profession, both for those entering it and for those already in it who subsequently find there are few people like them in the profession. This is one of the reasons I champion alternative routes like CILEX as a way into the profession which are more viable for those from poorer backgrounds and because the profession won't change without people from all backgrounds bringing in diversity of thought. #EqualityandDiversity should not be treated as buzzwords but followed with real, impactful action. https://lnkd.in/eeRPjzfz

I LOVE this picture by Marcus Jamieson-Pond FRSA from the celebrations at Royal Courts of Justice earlier this week Of course I love all the photos of the pioneering women in law present in the room. It was uplifting to realise just how many history makers we filmed for #first100years (76 to be exact!) But this photo is more expressive for me personally not because I feature in it, but because this welcome embrace made me reflect on my own journey of **Belonging** in the legal profession ...As someone who came to law late, having qualified at 32. ... As someone out of step with my trainee cohort meant that .... ... for years I felt like an outsider in the legal world Too many of those coming behind us tell me they are still in persuit of **finding my place** in a profession that still feels exclusive to many ... Thank you Marcus for capturing this moment in this photo - a sea of brilliant minds, open hearts, and outstretched hands. Although I was one of the few women there **not** to be a King's Counsel, as the night was a celebration of them, it proved to me that hard work and perseverance can help you get there in the end... We need to do more to welcome the next generation of legal professionals: • Mentoring young talents • Opening doors that were once closed • Creating spaces where everyone feels valued To my fellow legal professionals: let's ensure that no one feels like an outsider in our field! Play your part! #LegalInclusion #WomenInLaw #Mentorship #BelongingMatters

Continuing our Celebrating Women in Law Campaign and next up, is the brilliant Gayle Cosgrove ⭐ Gayle is a first year LLB student at the Open University, NALP trained Paralegal Technician, successful mid-life career changer now working at Shakespeare Martineau / Corclaim! Gayle's pieces of advice for fellow women in law: 'I've got two pieces of advice. Firstly, be the mistress of your own chessboard, and make your "why not" list your "to do" list. Everyone has reasons why they shouldn't do something. I did too. But slowly work things around, like pieces on a chessboard, until your "why not" isn't on that list. And secondly, enjoy it. If you enjoy it, that's half the battle!' Read more about Gayle's career so far and what she hopes for her legal career below 👇 #womeninlaw #lawstudent #paralegal #careerchanger #legalcareer
