🎬 Pre-production isn’t just important; it’s everything. Multi-million dollar production or not, the same lesson applies: the more prep the better! Remember, the best video production starts long before the cameras roll, and putting in that groundwork can set you up for success down the line. The time you invest in pre-production returns in the form of not just a high quality video, but having the readily availability to adapt to on location experiences such as having fire dancers perform on an outside stage that was conveyed last minute. Because we spent that time to bring all the equipment we may need, practice in general low-light experiences, or even taking the time to jot down a necessary itinerary for the night, we were easily anticipating and capturing all the highlights this night threw at us! Check our newest episode from our Workflow Mastery series: https://lnkd.in/gh-K8z6x There is value in the prep time and rushing it can lead to forgetful situations or being so unprepared you miss the moment. #VideoProduction #MarketingStrategy #ContentCreation #BusinessSuccess #CMO #Storytelling #PreProduction

This is an interesting overview of high frame rate filmmaking. I have a lot of experience with high speed shooting, having helped bring the Phantom cameras to the cinema production world. In my early days working with the Phantom I developed some software for converting the Phantom’s raw files for finishing and color correction since there weren’t any good tools back then. One of the things I built into the software as part of some experiments I was doing was the ability to selectively merge and omit frames from the conversion so that it was possible to shoot at a high frame rate but convert to a lower frame rate in a programatic way and to be able to control the amount of motion blur in the images. Around this time I heard that Doug Trumbull was wanting to resurrect ShowScan as a digital format as was considering the 65mm Phantom 65 camera to do it with. When I met him I let him know that he was going to need my software to do what he wanted and I ended up working with him for the duration of the project. One of the things that Doug wanted to do was to be able to selectively use different frame rates in a project - not just between different shots but actually within the frame. The idea is that the whole film would live in a 120fps container and different fragments could be at 24, 30, 60 or 120 within the frame. We did a lot of testing and experimenting, and produced a few short films — enough to learn that the use of high speed projection in a dramatic film would end up being used pretty modestly to not lose the actual feel of watching a movie. Ultimately nobody wanted to pay to do a major project in the formar. Maybe if we had kept at it a little longer Jim Cameron would have considered it, though I can’t image Jim and Doug working on a film together!
For those who are fascinated by storytelling and technology, I think you'll enjoy this video essay I put together over the past month about our relationship with frame rates, and the challenges filmmakers have faced with trying to push beyond 24 as the standard, often to negative if not mixed results... It's wild to think that we've spent almost 100 years with movies at that same framerate, and it's interesting to think of how they may change, and what that might mean emotionally for us as audiences. This is my first attempt at a YouTube video essay and I hope you enjoy!
Do movies have to be 24 frames a second?

Ever wonder what this thing is? 🎬 Well, it's called a clapper (or a slate). And no they aren’t just for show - but they do look pretty cool. In the world of video and film, things aren't always shot in the storyboarded order. Why? For a whole bunch of reasons— → All sorts of logistical challenges → Working around actor schedules → Making the process more efficient → Dealing with unpredictable weather and lighting With all these moving pieces, you need a tool to keep everything in sync and make sense of it all. Enter the clapper. It helps the post-production editors work their magic by providing clearly labeled shots and a distinct marker to sync up all the different video and audio sources. Every time we use a clapper on set, we get a similar reaction. "Omg I've always wanted to hold one of these" "Can I try it?!" It’s always a hit, and now you know—it’s more than just for show! It's the unsung hero working behind the scenes, keeping everything running smoothly. #behindthescenes #videoproduction #videomarketing #contentcreation

There is nothing more important than being proactive in video production. - Worrying about the concept? Do a test film. - Worrying about the location? Do a recce. - Worrying about the catering? Ask for a taster ahead of the shoot. - Worrying about casting? Do rehearsals. - Worrying about people being late? Book them hotels close to location. - Worrying about the tight schedule? Always add contingencies. Yes all of these things cost extra money. But you won’t play in the top leagues with a ‘cutting-corners’ attitude. To create big, think big. —- I share #videoproduction insights daily, follow me for more.
