The importance of holistically developing professional athletes in practice...
“I needed to get something outside of rugby, I just needed a plan for something I can do after rugby and I'm just mad into strength & conditioning and the gym side of things. So Rugby Players Ireland got me in touch with Setanta College and they've been unbelievable in aiding me. Great insight from Calvin Nash in the URC's More Than A Player series. An admirable aim undermined by a design-by-committee solution. The declared intention to roll out T1 rugby as the non-contact version of rugby in schools is as parochial as it gets. There is already a fast-paced, well-regulated, recognised non-contact version of rugby with national teams, World Cups and its own star players- it is called touch and is managed by the Federation of International Touch - you could even point to Try Tag Rugby as a more union-adjacent version. Instead World Rugby and the RFU with T1 rugby and previously Touch Union are trying to own the non-contact game and claim its players for their own- hence the dissolution of the O2 touch initiative after lockdown that had successfully seen many people take up touch rugby. As a player of both contact rugby union and touch rugby- I think T1 looks a hateful sport and a miserable experience as a competitive game. I'm surprised, and yet not surprised, that the overriding aim of 'get people running around with an oval ball and scoring tries' is being ignored here in the name of ownership and politics. https://lnkd.in/etRfAxUR I think that I read over a 100 comments on this and a number of related articles. And ultimately I come down in favour of the process as the Tier 2 Board includes existing Championship representation. In addition, selection of the two new clubs is based on a set of criteria that is consistent with creating a sound foundation including: (1) Minimum Operating Standards. (2) Finanacial Viability. (3) Player base, competiveness, commercial and geography. So the clubs' proposals should have to demonstrate that they are viable and have an expansion agenda. Interestingly, this would suggest that they should not all be based in south or west London as they would be competing against possibly Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club and definitely Harlequins and Saracens Group so in conflict with arguably (2) and certainly (3). But it does suggest London Irish Rugby Club, Wasps and Worcester Warriors might meed to adopt a flexible, franchise style approach to hit the mark. But I would like to know: (a) Who will be on the tender panel? (b) How will the money be used? (security or investment elsewhere in the levels below Premiership Rugby, other ways of improving supporter and player involvement). (c) More detailed criteria...at present it lacks the credibility of a properly robust process with a level playing field. And interestingly if any previously wound up clubs were to exist in a new format but with the same investors or using collateral from the previous incarnation, what would England Rugby and the Rugby Players Association have to say about unpaid rugby debts? So good start, but would definitely like more information as I am sure many other supporters would too.
Brilliant news for English rugby 👏 London Irish announced last night that they have officially submitted an expression of interest to the RFU to compete in the Tier 2 Championship league in 2025/26 ✍️ This comes a few weeks after Worcester Warriors made it public that they wish to compete. It’s looking more and more likely that we will see London Irish and Worcester return to top-flight rugby very soon 🏉 #rugby #englandrugby

90% of people who completed our survey said that their business held fantasy sport competitions for men's sport but not for the women. Let's change that. The Guinness Women's Six Nations kicks-off THIS weekend and we've been thinking... what's the best way to get people involved and immersed with the tournament this year? Our answer... we've set up a Six Nations Fantasy Rugby League powered by Energia so YOU can get more invested, learn about the players and invite your friends, family and colleagues to get invovled too! Not to mention there will be weekly prizes to be won which include match tickets and much more! We do it for men's sport... so why not the women's too? Interestingly enough, we surveyed our audience around the concept of Fantasy Leagues and it was highlighted that the majority of businesses tend to participate in the men's versions of these but very few do the same for the women. In fact - Get involved here: https://lnkd.in/eUH2psRj
Here we go 👊🏼 A new look Irish Rugby team will kick-off their Women’s Six Nations campaign next weekend against France, led by new co-captains Edel McMahon and Sam Monaghan. We’ve set up a new W6N Fantasy Rugby League with Energia to get YOU, your friends, family and colleagues involved this year. We see a lot of businesses set these up for the men’s game but never consider it for the women’s - so now is your chance to make that small change which had a BIG impact. Don’t be #HalfAFan Learn more about the players and pick your team for a chance to win some amazing prizes EVERY WEEK. A very disappointing day for rugby in Australia. It seems history is set to repeat itself with another Australian Super Rugby Team ceasing to exist. It is naive to think reducing the professional contracting opportunities by 20% will increase depth and competition. The NRL and AFL have 17 and 18 teams respectively, Rugby will have 4. Which code do you think juniors will steer towards? A 1/4 chance or a 1/17 or 1/18, less career opportunities will equal less depth as potential players seek certainty and better odds of making it professional. How could a governing body be ignorant to a franchise operating insolvent for multiple years? I question whether this failure of corporate governance raises more concerns for the future of professional rugby in Australia.
STATEMENT | RUGBY VICTORIA BOARD OF DIRECTORS Rugby Australia has made the heartbreaking decision to discontinue the Melbourne Rebels beyond the 2024 Super Rugby season. This decision has a significant impact on staff, families, players, fans, volunteers and elite pathways in Victoria. The hard work and dedication that has gone into the Melbourne Rebels behind the scenes over the past 14 years cannot be overstated and we extend our deepest sympathies to all during this difficult time. We must remember that the game of Rugby is built from the grassroots. It is about the people who play it, who administer it, who coach it and those who support it. Let's stand together now, more than ever, to support Victorian Rugby Union. #StrongerBindsVictoria #VicRugby #VicProud

SHINE THE LIGHT 🔦 Respect The Ref Check out an awesome feature piece put together by our Digital Marketing Executive Max Sharp. We wanted to shine the light on our North Harbour Rugby Referees Association (NHRRA) referees and start to change the negative narrative towards referees. Just like players, they: - Attend trainings to develop their skills - Review footage and their own performance to be better - Keep fit to ensure they can perform at a level - Have to hit certain fitness KPI's if they wish to progress through the ranks - Are assessed, coached, and developed by educators within the NHRRA community Finally, they are human beings, just like players. Let's think twice before we hurl negative abuse towards an official. Respect the ref.
Our North Harbour Rugby Referees put an incredible level of dedication into their match-day prep every week. Here we have Caleb Greaves, one of our Referees, explaining the work our Referees put into their performances every week. Respect the Ref. Absolutely.

What do the top four World Sevens Series International rugby sevens sides do well? I was asked why are the top four sides the best and what do they do really well to differentiate themselves? The obvious answers are: One that they have had "time together" as full time professionals to establish a playing side with a plentiful number of reserves ready at home to cover injuries and give the squad real depth and meaningful game based training. Secondly the players are better being more talented!- But this is not actually the case across the board! They are simply a better team and more together, with a clear game model, a healthy competitive squad culture (which goes back to having time together as professionals). But what about the way they play? What differentiates them? Here are my seven simple observations! 1. They recognise the importance of defence and set the side up initially to be hard to beat. This usually means three enforcers in the midfield with a real tackle and jackal threat. They usually score first as a result of a forced opposition error. 2. They set the side up with attacking flair, always ensuring they have two playmakers, and two top pace players on each edge. 3. Vitally they are PATIENT in attack recognising that they must move the opposition defence around if they are going to breach a world class defence via creating space or a miss match. 4. They move the ball quickly away from the breakdown stessing the defence. 5. Their edge play is excellent! They understand the need to go to the edge to move the opposition defence around and they realise the edge is an opportunity to create space elsewhere on a wide pitch! As a result they play 4-8 phases without being stressed! 6. Quite simply their support running is excellent "busting a gut" to support a "break", being either ready for the off-load/pass, or to run a legal blocking line to protect the ball carrier. 7. Their Kick-off play whether kicking or receiving is excellent with a clear understanding of primary and secondary roles, to ensure a higher percentage of possession! As a result a top four side will have real clarity and confidence in how to play their game and, as a result they know they will win if they execute well! #rugbysevens #worldsevensseries #internationalsevens #topsevensrugby #sevensdevelopment
