Coincidence or the benefits of the non-league pathway? Last night was another memorable evening for Hertford Town U18s as they defeated Category 3 Academy opposition once again in the FA Youth Cup, following up their 1st Round win over Cambridge United Football Club with victory over Bristol Rovers Football Club (Official) in the 2nd Round. Every member of their starting line-up has played senior football at either Step 4 or 5 of non-league football this season, accumulating thousands of minutes and regularly impacting games, often against ex-pros almost twice their age. A number of these players were also previously in the academy system (many at Category 3s) before being released. Consequently, they have embarked on an alternative career trajectory of playing as many games as possible in senior football at a young age, instead of a further 2-3 years in a professional academy with no senior experience. Are these results then simply the magic of the cup or, by reaching the 3rd Round against Arsenal F.C, are Hertford Town demonstrating that the non-league pathway - senior football between the ages of 16-18 - has given them the edge over their full-time academy opposition? #NLG

A brief follow up on the importance of developing in our pupils a commitment to contributing: Sport England published this week its Active Lives 2023-24 report. 47% of children and young people volunteered to support sport and physical activity in the last 12 months. There are 6.9% or 234,000 fewer children and young people volunteering compared to six years ago. The number of young people in refereeing and umpiring has fallen by 21% over the last six years. The positive association between engagement in sport (including volunteering/contributing) and mental wellbeing remains unchanged. Mount Kelly Harvey's example is more important than we might have first thought. Department for Education Independent Schools Council Nick Pontefract
Mount Kelly Year 11 pupil Harvey spoke to the school today about his rapid progression through the rugby refereeing ranks. A promising playing career was cut short through injury but he admitted to being always a little bit more interested in what the ref was doing; he now expresses his passion for the game in a slightly different way to his mates, and is tipped for the top. A school's sport programme is best judged not by results, nor even by participation levels (however important these are), but by success in cementing a commitment to contributing, with a whistle or down the local club on a Sunday morning, that endures long after you have hung up your playing boots. Nelson College is seeking intervention from New Zealand Rugby (NZR) after an "unjust, discriminatory, and inconsistent" decision by Tasman Rugby Union, NZ (TRU) will mean it will be the only boys' school in the country excluded from playing age group rugby. The school has sent an urgent request to NZR asking it to establish a new, fairer, independent club status application process. It is in response to a proposal from the Tasman Rugby Union to no longer permit Nelson College to participate in Saturday rugby, because it is not a club. Instead, the TRU asks that U14, U15, U16 college players play exclusively for local rugby clubs. Nelson College has been told that TRU’s rationale includes fostering club rugby to support senior rugby pathways and concerns about the perceived decline in services within the college’s junior rugby programme recently. Nelson College Principal Richard Washington says he is extremely disappointed with the "poor process" for how TRU arrived at its "incorrect assessment of the college’s junior programme" and the rationale that fielding Nelson College teams is detrimental to regional rugby. “Rather than stopping Nelson College playing, in my view clubs have an opportunity to work closer with the schools that don’t have a rugby programme, like the collaborative partnership we have with FC Nelson for football. I would be happy to share with the other schools how we work with FC Nelson if this would be helpful.” Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/g9ECC6Uc #NelsonTasman #NelsonCollege #TasmanRugbyUnion #ClubRugby

U.S. Soccer Federation needs to make an immediate USMNT head coaching change and retool for World Cup 2026. No more excuses. I believe there needs to be a complete overhaul of soccer in the US starting at the grassroots level. No more going through the motions season after season, year after year, only to discover *spoiler alert* that we’ve reached the pinnacle of mediocrity. Collectively, our expectations should far exceed “participation trophy” mentality given the $$$ spent on soccer in the US compared to other countries. To be truly competitive on the world stage, we need a comphrehensive player development curriculum where the best players are identified, trained and move up, regardless of household income. #ussoccer #soccercoaching #usmnt
