🤳 Device Takeover is a growing threat to banking customers which consists of performing Account Takeover directly from the victim’s device. To complete Device Takeover, cybercriminals leverage a type of malware called Remote Access Trojans (RATs), which are designed to remotely control an infected device, sending commands and receiving data back in response. Credential stuffing—the gift that keeps on giving 🎁 It’s nothing new: credential theft is still the #1 attack vector. A recent technique, the 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗜𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿, forces users to enter credentials on a fake login page (often Google) in kiosk mode. Once entered, malware swipes them directly from the browser’s credential store. The reality is clear: relying on credentials alone isn’t enough to verify the real identity of the person requesting access. By combining user and device authentication, you verify the full identity of every access request, making it much harder for attackers to exploit stolen credentials. As a former member of a successful QR code payments startup, I can confirm that QR code spoofing remains a significant barrier to its widespread adoption. For any transaction to be secure, both the merchant (payee identity) and the transaction outcome (payment result) must be verifiable. This requires robust cryptographic authentication—something static QR codes cannot provide. While I still believe in the potential of QR codes, it’s clear that they lack the security needed for secure payments. Online payments can mitigate some security risks, but there’s always a chance the payee website could be compromised. This doesn’t mean QR codes shouldn’t be used in payments; even card payment terminals have limitations, as they only provide payment verification, not the merchant’s authenticity. The choice is to either accept and manage these risks, or implement an innovative solution like the AuthGate TAD (Transaction Authentication Devices) that works with any QR code payment method and that authenticates both the payee and the payment.
