Electric Shock Drowning (ESD) kills people every year, yet most of us have never heard of it. With summer now upon us, it's important to recognize the risks and signs of ESD before heading to your favorite swimming place. This quick video explains what ESD is, how you can detect the risk, and some of the ways to prevent it. For more info: nfpa.org/watersafety

I first heard about ESD or electric shock drowning from a guy name Mike Holt. He had a seminar he gave in Hickory decades ago. We were talking about electrical, safety and electrical design, specifically around docks, marinas, and of course, households. Mike (an avid water skier)showed some videos and pictures of a couple of boat hoisting installations and boat houses. He talked about some accidents that happened sometime ago. Real danger. Thanks for the reminder

Wow! This is something people definitely don’t think of when it comes to water safety. Terrifying!!

There was a couple in Mexico a month ago where this just happened at a hotel hot tub. The husband sadly did not make it but the wife was able to get pulled out of the hot tub and survived. Very scary stuff, bystanders were trying to get to the husband but were obviously getting shocked and couldn’t save him. :(

There is a story about this being covered up by TUI. Young family in Mexico where a hotel pool got electrified and the child died.
