If you have any interest in gaining an insight on the political and military dynamics in Libya #Libya, consider giving this podcast a listen.
*NEW PODCAST* In this podcast, Janes senior analyst James Trigg joins Harry Kemsley OBE and Sean Corbett CB MBE to discuss Libya. Historic civil and political unrest have made it a country of interest globally for decades. While other conflicts and world events have forced countries to switch their focus, Libya remains a country which requires attention particularly for countries in Southern Europe and the Middle East. They discuss how open-source analysis can help plug the gap in understanding when attention is focused elsewhere and how using Janes tradecraft with a long-term view, provides a more balanced understanding of the stability, impact, and influence that Libya has in the region and beyond. Episode 11 of our podcast, The External, provides the key takeaways from a recent article in the JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies by Professor Tanja A. Börzel (Freie Universität Berlin) considering the reasons why member states have upgraded common interests in supporting Ukraine without granting the EU additional supranational power. 🚀 Starting today, the Italian #G7 unfolds amid geopolitical fragmentation and rising multipolarity, with #Africa at the center. Italy’s G7 agenda highlights Africa’s strategic importance. In the episode on Africa of the newly released miniseries 'Meloni goes multilateral' led by colleague Teresa Coratella, with Elizabeth Sidiropoulos from the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) we talk about the G7 and Africa. Some of my thoughts below! 👇 📍 Over recent years, international players have been re/posturing in Africa. New ‘middle powers’ like Turkey and the UAE have entered the scene, while Europe and the US are reengaging, refocusing their relationships. #Geopolitics 🌍 Why Africa? Massive market opportunities and abundant natural resources make it a geopolitical hotspot. Countries are diversifying partners and value chains amid protectionist policies and sanctions. #GlobalEconomy ✴ The rising interest in Africa has sparked a battle of narratives and ‘offers’—G7 vs BRICS+, development vs investments, oil & gas vs renewables, climate vs socio-economic growth. The rules of the game are changing! 🌟 Africa is engaging with these dynamics to meet diverse needs. More partners mean more support for African priorities, giving Africa leverage to influence global decisions and become a norm-setter. #Africahasrisen ➡ #GiorgiaMeloni ’s new #MatteiPlan is Italy’s attempt to navigate this landscape. It’s more than an anti-migration plan - it’s about economic interests, leveraging Italian expertise, and rethinking the development-investment nexus. It aims to shift from ‘aiding’ to ‘investing’ in Africa. Innovative yes, but needs connection with G7, Europe, and other partners to succeed. #InvestmentNotAid 📝 So, what should Italy’s G7 focus on regarding Africa? First, effective coordination on #infrastructure development - no infrastructure, no investments. Second, rethink #communication. G7 values like the rule of law should be communicated as gateways to attract investment, not as moral impositions. Market and policy stability and coherence are key for investors from all walks of life. Third, open #dialogue beyond the G7 - in a way, Meloni inviting leaders from India, Brazil, Turkey, the UAE, goes in this direction. Today’s fragmented world requires agility and discussions with both aligned and non-aligned partners. 👉 Meloni is diving into this G7 with a currently more solid standing than several other G7 participants, backed by her recent success at the EU parliamentary elections and a relatively solid majority at home. And Italy’s less controversial image in Africa compared to other European players might put her in a relatively interesting position - unusual for Italy - to drive international integrated efforts with Africa. #Diplomacy Stay tuned for more updates as the G7 unfolds. #G7 #Africa #Geopolitics #MatteiPlan #Italy European Council on Foreign Relations

Just listened to Chatham House podcast. Episode is called “Is Europe falling apart?” Key points below ⬇️ 🔹The structural problem of the EU for decades is that the policies we need are now European, but the politics we need - remain national. 🔹 3 crucial EU challenges as of today: security (Russia), migration, and economic crisis. 🔹Wise politics know what to do, they just don’t know how to do that and be reelected. 🔹EU lacks a strategic vision and leadership in defence. In the absence of a single leader and with consensus taking too long, what we need is “a coalition of the willing”. 🔹EU countries must increase GDP spending on defence to 3%, we can’t rely on the US anymore. I recall Macron’s Sorbonne speech a year ago. He said that “Our Europe is mortal. It can die”. We all must take that speech serious and to not take for granted the existence of the EU and European prosperity. I encourage you to listen the episode (link below) and to share your thoughts - just 33 minutes long. https://lnkd.in/d93stnR2

There is a predominant narrative about the war in Ukraine in Western media, and like most predominant narratives, it doesn't always get everything right. In this week's podcast, we speak with Glenn Diesen, a Norwegian professor of political science whose new book, "The Ukraine War & the Eurasian World Order" unpacks some of these inconvenient truths and provides a realist take on what the conflict means for the broader international system, and how our determined understanding may disincentivize opportunities for peace. Have a listen and be sure to share any thoughts or reactions with us. https://lnkd.in/eAimgWJn

Where you stand depends on where you sit! Coordination is in a sense at odds with accountability. If we are all in the same boat, paddling along, careful not to rock the boat too much, who will speak up if the direction is wrong? That is the fundamental question posed by the three thought leaders Trumanitarian has invited into the studio for what may well be one of the most powerful episodes ever. Meg Sattler (Executive Director of Ground Truth Solutions), Ed Schenkenberg van Mierop (Executive Director of HERE-Geneva), and Adelina Kamal (former Executive Director of ASEAN AHA Centre) discuss with Trumanitarian host Lars Peter Nissen what it means to be “independent” in the humanitarian sector today. In this episode, we're juxtaposing independence against the backdrop of accountability, effectiveness, and the challenges that shadow their interplay. The conversation will resonate with anyone within or outside the humanitarian sector who are concerned with accountability, groupthink, and the critical balance between cooperation and the autonomy necessary to critique, improve, and innovate. Join this conversation which promises an honest look into the dynamic tensions that shape humanitarian work today. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/dGEUzFZZ
