Aloha! In my latest Honolulu Civil Beat column I write about how Hawai’i Island could become the breadbasket of the Pacific. Hawai’i has some of the best food-growing conditions on the planet, yet it’s well known that we import more than 80% of what we eat. Importing jacks up prices, contributes to climate change and puts everyone at risk if there’s a disruption to the supply chain. It qualifies as one definition of insanity that a place as abundant as Hawai’i imports so much food at higher costs and greater harm and risk to ourselves and the planet. We can continue to lament how we fellinto such a precarious place or we can find ways to feed ourselves in ways that are healthy, affordable and delicious. Hawai’i can become the breadbasket of the Pacific. It’s a challenge to wean ourselves off of imported food. But it’s doable. Keala Kahuanui of NA KALAI WAA is up for that challenge. She fed a canoe with food exclusively from Hawai’i Island as it voyaged to Papahanaumokuakea National Marine Monument. He wa’a he moku, he moku he wa’a. The canoe is an island and the island is a canoe. What has happened on the canoe now needs to happen on the island. Kahuanui responded to a vision and made something significant happen. She fed a canoe crew with food exclusively raised on Hawai’i island. Now, the island needs to feed itself. A new vision is for Hawai’i island in the coming decade is to make true strides toward not only feeding itself, but being able to share its abundance with the rest of its oceanic neighbors. Lots to catch up on and look forward to in our August newsletter. Articles you may have missed, news from the walking world, walks and festivals. Also, introducing One Mile Walks, our new programme being launched later this year. We will be curating and creating walks of about one mile with a focus on providing good access information so people can make up their own mind about which walks they will enjoy. It’s a space in the walking world that is largely overlooked. Typical ‘short’ walks can vary from 1 to 6 miles, depending on your sources - but all many people want is a leisurely bimble and a mile is perfect for that. For many a mile is a challenge or painful - so One Mile Walks is careful about the language it uses. Not ‘short’ or ‘easy’ - rather ‘a mile’ and you can decide if that is short or easy for you - or not. And there are no suggestions for ‘if you want to walk a bit further’ - so you’ll not feel like you are missing out by not walking more. We will also provide good access information so people can decide which walks will suit them and their equipment. Maybe you can manage steps, but only a few and only if they are flat and even. Maybe you need stile free, step free and wide gates to accommodate your wheelchair. That’s potentially a lot of information, but walkers can focus on what they need to know. We would love you to be involved: partner your organisation with the programme, send us your walks, collaborate on the access approaches and promote One Mile Walks to the people you work with. I’m really excited about the many great ways this programme could develop and would like to hear your thoughts Happy - one mile - walking https://lnkd.in/dSsD6Ed6
