What is #OwnVoices writing and how does it impact LGBTQ+ publishing? This week, I'm going to look at #OwnVoices writing and my thoughts around it. We think of #OwnVoices writing as authentic writing, written by members of the LGBTQ+ community. Because they have lived experience, the expectation is that it is better, more authentic writing. While I agree, LGBTQ+ people have to have space to tell their stories, #OwnVoices isn't the only thing that matters. There are plenty of steps in the publishing process where authenticity and accuracy can be checked. Editors and authenticity (sensitivity) readers can be used, for example. What are your thoughts about #OwnVoices LGBTQ+ publishing? There's no right and wrong answers but I'd love to know your thoughts! #Writing #Publishing #LGBT #LGBTQ --- 👋 Hey, I'm Nick, an editor and proofreader specialising in LGBTQ+ writing. I'd love to know a little more about what you do and perhaps find a way for us to work together!

Some friendly and prideful reminders about inclusive language. 🏳️🌈 1. The singular "they" is grammatically correct, and you have likely used it before you even heard about they/them personal pronouns. If you defend your use of "he/she" using grammar, I will assume you are desperately grabbing at any socially acceptable excuse to resist inclusivity. 2. If you mess up somebody's pronouns... acknowledge, apologize, correct, and move on. No need to start a monologue about how it's hard for you to remember. This not only wastes time but puts the other person in an even more awkward position where they feel pressured to assure you it's okay. 3. Trans people do not "identify" as a certain gender. They ARE that gender. While I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I don't pretend to know the experiences of every other sub-community, and I recognize my privilege as a cis-gendered white woman to feel safe sharing these sentiments. I would greatly appreciate other members of the LGBTQ+ community correcting me on anything in the comments. 🫶 #Pride #PrideMonth #InclusiveLanguage #Inclusivity #WordsMatter #LGBTQ #Pronouns

The majority of people who are LGBTQ+ have faced discrimination at the workplace, and 1 in 5 choose not to report it. Research by EduBirdie has found that “70% of LGBTQ+ people feel lonely, misunderstood, marginalized, or excluded at work and 59% believe their sexual orientation or gender identity has hindered their careers”. Having access to LGBTQ+ networks and mentors can reduce the perception that being out at work will impact their career progression. [PWC] Real Mentors Network mentors and mentor program support are available to organizations who are committed to creating greater psychological safety and increased sense of belonging for their team members who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Commanding Respect as a Young LGBTQ Founder As a 21-year-old LGBTQ founder, I share how I earned respect without waiting for anyone to hand it to me. I explain that respect is not given, but commanded. From the start, I set the tone, showed up with clear direction, and people followed. My confidence was evident in my words and actions. When faced with criticism or doubt, I kept my cool and walked away from conversations that didn’t serve me. I never asked for approval and positioned myself as valuable, making it clear that I had what clients needed. Age doesn’t determine your value - you do. #LGBTQ #Entrepreneurship #Confidence #Respect #ValueYourself #entrepreneurtips #selfbelief

ARTICLE WORTH READING! On The Times Higher Education, "'How LGBTQ leaders navigate a predominantly non-LGBTQ world" Interesting article about one academic’s perspective on what “LGBTQ Leadership” should be. The focus here is on leadership in the context of being a queer professional. Funny: this is what I also talk about in both “Pride Leadership” and “Your Queer Career(R)” … that context matters and we LGBTQ+ Leaders need to be aware of that context in order to be successful. https://lnkd.in/gZc-aZty #lgbtqa #diversity #inclusion #thegayleadershipdude #leadership

Diverse and authentic LGBTQ+ representation in media is important and impactful. Yet, we continue to see a lack of nuanced portrayals in mainstream entertainment. This post explores and challenges the "GBF (gay best friend)" trope, which has become all too familiar. The GBF (gay best friend) trope is a common theme in movies, TV, and other entertainment media where an LGBTQ+ character is cast as a friend to a straight character, often providing support, comic relief, and advice without being given a developed backstory of their own. This portrayal, though seemingly entertaining and progressive, perpetuates stereotypes and fails to represent the full humanity and experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals. As we strive for diverse and authentic representation, let's challenge the GBF trope and demand nuanced depictions that honor the wide range of LGBTQ+ identities and kinds of friendships that exist. 🌈💙 Click the link in the comments below to read the full blog post. #reframe52 #allyshipisaverb #deieducation #inclusion #dei #inclusionmatters #deib #deistrategy #diversityandinclusion #diversityequityinclusion #belonging #doingbetter #allyship #benefits #humanresources #pridemonth #pride #visibility #LGBTQvisibility #GBF #LBF #LGBTQRepresentation #AuthenticityMatters #friendship

Labor Day is a time to recognize the contributions of all workers and the strides that have been made to protect people’s rights in the workplace. But it is also a time to acknowledge that there is still much work to be done. According to an August 2024 report by the Williams Institute of the UCLA School of Law, “employment discrimination against LGBTQ people continues to be persistent and widespread. Almost half (47%) of LGBTQ employees reported experiencing discrimination or harassment at work (including being fired, not hired, not promoted, or being verbally, physically, or sexually harassed) because of their sexual orientation or gender identity during their lifetime.” We encourage you to read the study at https://lnkd.in/dVveWi2f #laborday #UCLAWilliamsInstitute #WilliamsInstitute #genderequality #lawUCLA #equalrights #identiversity #GenderAndSexualIdentity #RealPeopleRealidentitiesRealLearning #gay #queer #lgbt #lgbtq #lesbian #trans #nonbinary #edutainment

Recently, someone asked a thought-provoking question: "I want to be an LGBTQ ally, but I'm worried that people will think I'm part of the community. How can I be an ally?" My response? If you genuinely stand as an ally, labels shouldn't hold you back. If the idea of being labeled makes you uneasy, it's essential to introspect why. Do you perceive the label as negative or inferior? If not, it shouldn't faze you. Authentic allyship means unwavering support, without fear or conditions. It's about fostering environments of acceptance and respect, advocating for equality and understanding, irrespective of how you're perceived. If the label comes your way, embrace it. It signifies solidarity and empathy, a commitment to making our world better for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Allyship demands standing up for what's right, even if it means confronting misunderstandings or prejudice. True allies don't fret over labels; they focus on creating positive change. 🌈💪 Looking for a speaker this Pride month or beyond?
