No offense to anyone of course, but I think this is pretty silly... "Faculty Advisor." There was a time when this enlightened "end state" came early and naturally to every Marine via the many enduring official and unofficial counseling / mentoring processes the Marine Corps used to expouse and embrace (nay...demand)..you know, the ones Marines were CONSTANTLY immersed in. Remember official Counseling and Training Jackets...useful tools to help Marines as needed 24/7/365...as opposed to something 100% electronic useful only to go on Christmas / New Years leave? The "mentoring epiphanies" provided by the course were also an end-state of beginner PME...such as graduating NCO school...yes, NCO School. We might want to also stop watering down the implied billet expectations and responsibilities of Squad Leaders, Platoon Sergeants, Platoon Commanders, 1st Sgts and Sgts Majors...and of the other myriad grownups in uniform. ----------- "MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – The U.S. Marine Corps’ Training & Education Command held its very first graduation for the new military occupational specialty Faculty Advisor at Marine Corps University, April 24, 2024. “The new 0961 faculty advisor MOS is a better tuned process,” said Master Sgt. Saul H. Lopez, a task analyst with TECOM. “It seeks out knowledgeable and personable Marines who understand human dimensions and can articulate information with a more acceptable delivery in teaching, coaching, and mentoring young Marines for a more efficient war fighting organization.” This new academic MOS identifies staff noncommissioned officers who are professionally trained in understanding and mentoring Marines on personal and professional goals, to include career paths and higher education. The 16 graduates left the course with a deep understanding of military requirements and academic pursuits, a skillset that can help them navigate the planning process for opportunities that may be available to their Marines in and outside of the Marine Corps. The faculty advisor course is not specific to any MOS and those who meet the criteria are encouraged to apply."

This”failed experiment” in enlisted leadership starts at the SMMC level to allow this to happen. By definition of this new MOS it sounds like a glorified “Career Planner” type with a few more arrows in the quiver. Marines, at least from my personal experience, are geared physically and mentally to improvise, overcome and adapt to any situation. They are used to doing more with less and being a jack of many trades meaning the expectation is to do more with less and get the job done. There seems to be too much involvement from the GIFs (Good Idea Fairies) who live their lives by PowerPoint presentations trying to always give credibility to their own self worth. Simple leadership and responsibility starts at the Team Leader level and it is up to the enlisted ranks to start getting back to the basics - a simple “S” in Supervision would be a good start.

This is literally part of an enlisted leaders job description….. You are telling me we now need to somehow “identify” which of the ones that we screened and selected for promotion to begin with are actually doing thier job? “This new academic MOS identifies staff noncommissioned officers who are professionally trained in understanding and mentoring Marines on personal and professional goals, to include career paths and higher education.” Sweet - an MOS for your rank.

More gimmicks and horse sh*t. Every NCO, SNCO and Officer should be able to teach, mentor, lead....TMI worked just fine.

Well this is actually a great thing. MCU and CEME specifically have been conducting the Faculty Advisor Course for years. This prepares all Marines who will be serving as faculty advisors or FAs at every one of the Regional SNCO Academies to be a Basic Faculty Advisor. Designating them with an MOS provides value for the Marine, the college, and the institution. It validates one formally trained in a specific area. It shows those who are currently serving in this critical and important billet just as formal school instructors have been doing for years. It also allows the Marine Corps to search for Marines with this experience for follow on tours. In the end no different than any other instructor gig, SDA, or collateral duty job that has an AMOS for there community. How is any of this not good or a problem?

I realize that I retired two whole years ago, but when I was a young Marine, all NCO's, SNCO's as well as Company/Field Grade Officers were "faculty advisors". That was simply part of the role and a rudimentary expectation of anyone with a blood stripe. I didn't know that the Corps was so heavy on manning/staffing that we needed to create useless and repetitive billets just so that Marines had jobs..

Isn't this what SNCO's are for oh wait, the current leadership knows what's best for their Marines in their section/branch/company etc... The current leadership does not value the NCO/SNCO anymore or appreciate the time spent with their Marines. How many times I have recommended discipline only for the leadership to say no. One month later it is an "I told you so". Faculty Advisors are not the answer and certainly a waste of an MOS designation and training. If an SNCO can't tell a junior Marine how he got to where is or what training is best recommended then why are they even here.
