Blockbuster went from being an industry giant to bankrupt.   Because it chose to do what it always did.   In a David versus Goliath moment, Netflix, with just a hundred employees and a dream, offered Blockbuster $50 million to acquire Netflix.   That day, Blockbuster laughed off the offer and sent Netflix packing and it changed the trajectory of both companies.   Blockbuster stuck to its guns, while Netflix embraced change with open arms.   The former clung to its outdated rental model, the latter revolutionized the game with monthly subscriptions and unlimited rentals.   By 2010, Blockbuster found itself on the wrong side of history, filing for bankruptcy.   While today, Netflix has the most subscribers of any streaming service.   Sometimes, playing it safe is the riskiest move of all.   Just because something has been done a certain way, doesn't mean there aren't opportunities for change, growth, and improvement.   SOPs, processes, and procedures are great, but when we resist change, we also kill the motivation of our teams to go above and beyond.   The worst that can happen? - Stagnation.   So, do you let “the way it has been done” stifle you, or do you let innovation fuel growth?   #entrepreneurship #leader #leadership #startups #growth

This was the first store. It marked the beginning of a video rental giant that would dominate the late 20th century. What an unbelievable idea. What could go wrong? It had a massive selection of movies and a user-friendly system, Its growth was rapid. It was a blockbuster. A household name. However, Poof. the rise of digital streaming services like Netflix led to Blockbuster's downfall Blockbuster's rapid rise to success and eventual failures offers several key business lessons that even individuals can apply to their own careers or personal endeavors.   1. Adaptability Is Key to Long-Term Success Blockbuster thrived when it innovated. However, it failed to adapt. Even when Netflix offered to partner with them in 2000, Blockbuster dismissed the opportunity.   2. Customer Experience Should Always REMAIN a Priority Blockbuster's early success was due to its emphasis on a superior customer experience. Then they grew, they introduced practices that frustrated customers. What works today .....may not work tomorrow ...if customer preferences shift. 3. Don’t Get Complacent in success Blockbuster believed its dominance in the market would protect it from competition. Success is not permanent unless you continuously strive to improve. Enter Netflix 🥁 Imagine a time when DVD tapes were all the rage. But then Reed Hastings had a bright idea: tackle those annoying late fees from Blockbuster rentals. With just $25,000 and a cool idea, Reed Hastings and his buddy Marc Randolph started Netflix. Instead of stores, they mailed DVDs to your door. Plus, no late fees with their subscription model. Pretty cool, right? Blockbuster could've squashed Netflix with their own online plan. But they missed the boat. Blockbuster tried going online, but it cost a lot and didn't work well.
