According to PwC's Net Zero Economy Index, global #carbonintensity reduction has slowed to its lowest in over a decade. "Higher for longer" means "slower to transition" 🐌🐌🐌 🌍 Never mind culture wars, high interest rates are the real curveball in the journey towards a Net Zero economy, according to Wood Mackenzie's latest analysis. 💸 Why? Because, the persistently high rates spike the cost of transitioning to a net-zero global economy, hitting renewables and emerging technologies hardest. 📈💡 🦅 In the US, a 2% increase in the risk-free interest rate sjack up the levelised cost of electricity (LCoE) for renewables by a staggering 20%, whereas gas turbine plants would only see an 11% rise. 📈💨 And this is before anyone said "cost of living" crisis! 🙀 ☀️ So even though renewables may hold a general edge over hydrocarbons, rising interest rates are putting a dent in their advantage. 💨💰 🔑 Wood Mackenzie's analysis doesn't just point out the problem; it also offers three key policy recommendations for policymakers. 📝 1️⃣ Targeted and non-discriminatory subsidies 💚 👉 But, can this be done without trade wars? 2️⃣ Strengthen carbon markets like Article 6 of Paris Agreement 🌍💼 👉 But, can this be done in mercantile, "beggar thy neighbour" G20 3️⃣ More climate finance, leveraging derivatives, to fuel low-carbon investments. 💰🌱 👉 Because it ended so well the last time 🚀 So can we tackle these challenges head-on and accelerate towards a sustainable, net-zero future?
