Last week, I attended a wrap party for "The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland" and met Gerard Butler in person. Finding Your Balto: The Leader You Might Overlook Leadership often comes from the most unexpected places. In every organization, there may be a Balto—someone who doesn’t fit the traditional mold of leadership, yet possesses the resilience, intelligence, and instinct to guide others through the most challenging moments. Balto was not Leonhard Seppala’s first choice for a lead sled dog. He was considered too small, too inexperienced—better suited for hauling freight than leading a team. Yet, when given an opportunity, Balto not only proved himself but ultimately saved lives. He navigated through blizzards, stopped his team from plunging into icy waters, and led a critical mission to success. Look around your team. Your Balto might be the lake and pond applicator with shoulder-length hair, a degree in environmental sciences, and an eye on an MBA in business. They might be the field technician who knows the terrain better than anyone, the quiet thinker who speaks up when it matters most, or the team member whose instincts guide them to make the right call under pressure.
