As we strive to embrace more nature based solutions (at which we must go further and faster) we must also avoid binary choices and purist approaches. Taxonomy is important to understanding the mix of choices that gives us the best outcomes for different challenges irrespective of their categorisation - acceptance of hybrid approaches is the key to unlocking a more sustainable future. I have heard some suggest that the use of some aeration to assist nature might change the categorisation of the solution from NBS because of greater carbon consumption. (In the case of Aero-Fac® negligible particularly compared to more conventional processes), but that aeration might firstly make the utilisation of NBS more suitable by cutting down on some of the land area required but it might also reduce more harmful methane emissions. There is a wealth of opportunity to exploit through helping nature to do its thing and in a number of cases the evidence is already plain to see so little excuse for resisting adoption! Aero-Fac® should be at the top of everyone’s options list…

#water | "Climate change is causing a range of serious issues across the world, but a main one is a lack of water." Water continues to be the most important topic for our future: 👉 Water scarcity 👉 Water quality 👉 Water pollution 👉 Irrigation water 👉 Drinking water 👉 Water, water, water We can't delay any longer. It's time to focus on WATER. I'd love to hear your ideas on how we can use water more efficiently, how we can conserve water and how we can ensure future (and current) generations have safe drinking water in all areas of the world. #climateaction #waterindustry

The cost of climate change and nutrient pollution if not monitored and managed could amount to an annual cost of £16.5 million for increased water treatment costs, financial losses for local business when water courses are shut to the public, and reductions in property values in the surrounding area. 💧 Europe’s water in need of resilience Across Europe 🌍, water security is under strain. Every year, 20% of the land and 30% of the population experience water stress—a number that’s set to grow as climate change accelerates. We’re seeing the effects already: increased flooding from more intense rainfall, threatening ecosystems, communities, and economies. The new report from the European Environment Agency highlights the scope of these challenges. Flood risks are rising, while surface waters continue to be affected by pollutants like mercury. Our groundwater supplies, essential for drinking water and ecosystems, are under pressure from agricultural pollutants, which are affecting water quality and play a vital role in public health. 🏥 The message is clear: Europe must act now to improve its water resilience. Reducing water use, adopting nature-based solutions, and improving water management are key to ensuring that our water systems can adapt to a changing climate. 🔗 Discover the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dtDkJQBX #EureopeanEnvironmentAgency #SPRINGSProject #FutureOfWater #WaterSecurity #ClimateResilience #SustainableWater #ClimateChange #PublicHealth #PlanetaryHealth #ClimateHealth #EU4Health

European waters are not in good condition, according to a study summarised by the European Environment Agency (EEA): https://lnkd.in/eQkbBdXQ The pressure from habitat degradation is still very high, i.e. the self-dynamic development and rehabilitation of water bodies is particularly important. Nature restoration or reconnecting rivers and their floodplains and restoring wetlands and peatlands can lead to healthier, biodiverse freshwater ecosystems, which can supply good quality water while also storing carbon and mitigating the impact of extreme weather events.
