This is an interesting discussion about how creating a better long-term care system might help working caregivers. I remember well that when my mom retired, she immediately shifted into a relatively full-time role of caregiving for my grandmother, who, because of my mom's support and care, was able to stay living in her own apartment. There's no way she could have done this if my mom would have had to keep working to pay the bills. Having volunteered in long-term care, I know the value that a solid and caring long-term care system can provide to individuals and their families. Not everyone can age safely in their own home - and, I would argue, when long-term care is well done, it can provide a better overall experience for everyone. The individual can receive professional physical care and families can support their loved ones in emotional ways instead of focusing all their attention on their loved one's physical needs. We know that there is an increasing sandwich generation of people caring for aging parents while still having kids at home - in some cases younger children or even grandchildren they are helping to raise. We also know that women are disproportionately impacted by caregiving, and often are faced with juggling multiple caregiving roles along with a career. Is better long-term care the solution? I think it is probably an important puzzle piece... #caregiving #workingcaregivers
