Nearly 700 participants at the #SERE2024 European Conference on Ecological adopted the #TartuDeclaration on 30 August, 2024. The document, targeting policymakers at EU and Member State level emphasises the urgent need to effectively implement the EU Nature Restoration Law, which came into force just a few days earlier. Nature #restoration plays a critical role in addressing the #climate and #biodiversity crises, and in that, the participants recognised #NRL as the cornerstone on the way to ensuring the well-being of future generations of Europeans. The #TartuDeclaration outlines several key recommendations for the successful implementation of the NRL. 👉 Immediate #action is urged, taking advantage of existing scientific knowledge to begin restoration efforts across Europe’s ecosystems. 👉 Long-term, coherent #financing is also pointed out as essential with the establishment of a dedicated EU fund for biodiversity protection and restoration is of utmost importance, and a prerequisite to leverage private capital. Moreover, the declaration emphasises the importance of inclusive information sharing and #stakeholderengagement, advocating for the integration of bottom-up approaches and promoting a nature restoration culture. It also calls for creating ambitious, scientifically grounded National Restoration Plans, supported by a collaborative effort between policymakers, scientists, and practitioners. Finally, the #TartuDeclaration insists on rigorous monitoring, reporting, and enforcement to ensure the success of the NRL, with a focus on transparency and the involvement of citizen science. The #TartuDeclaration was anonymously supported by 674 participants from 47 countries, reflecting a broad consensus on the need for decisive action to restore and preserve Europe’s natural heritage. 🌿 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞’𝐬 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬! 🌎 🌍 🌏 The Regulation on Nature Restoration marks a significant milestone in continent-wide ecosystem recovery! Entered into force on 18 August, this groundbreaking law is the first European-wide legislation of its kind. It sets legally binding targets to restore 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030 and aims to restore all ecosystems in need by 2050. This regulation is a key component of the European Green Deal and the EU Biodiversity Strategy. By 1 September 2026, Member States are required to submit their national restoration plans, detailing their strategies and monitoring progress. The journey to the law’s adoption was strongly supported by the public and the scientific community. Over one million citizens signed petitions and sent messages in favour of the law. Additionally, more than 6,000 scientists, 100 businesses, youth organizations, and various civil society groups advocated for its passage, demonstrating widespread support across multiple sectors. Addressing these challenges is not only essential for environmental sustainability but also for economic resilience. This landmark regulation highlights the EU's robust commitment to safeguarding Europe’s natural heritage while strengthening the foundation for a sustainable and resilient economy. 🌿 We invite you to flip through our slides below for more details. #environment #naturerestoration
