Ever wondered if doing an internship as a PGR is really worth the time out from your research that is needed. Let the experience speak for itself, in the words of our latest Intern Alumna, Gabriela. "In summary, here are the top 3 reasons why I think an internship is worth doing for a postgraduate researcher: 1. Working in a team offers a unique experience for many PhD students, who are working on a niche intellectual question and who may have little daily communication on the topic with others. 2. Exploring new university neighbourhoods is especially useful for those postgraduates who would like to embed themselves within the University ecology long-term, as an academic or professional colleague. 3. Standing out to employers is achieved by developing skillsets that your peers would not have had the chance to during their PhD."

Several years ago, during a laboratory interview, the researcher remarked a comment that persists in my mind to this day. - "I've encountered many young researchers like you, engaging in summer internships throughout their academic journey but always in diverse companies and laboratories. Almost none of them have repeated and continued doing the same research" (Adapted) While this comment may suggest the importance of focusing on a specific field for the upcoming stages such as pursuing a degree, a Master's, a Ph.D., I hold a different perspective. I believe that our diverse learning experiences in various laboratories, interactions with diverse colleagues, and exposure to different situations equip us with a broader focus and more applicable expertise. Questions Corner Question: How can I fund my summer opportunities, including research and internships? There are several resources to help fund summer opportunities. Read below to see a few highlighted options or contact someone at the Career Center to get started! Apply for the Summer Internship Funding Awards to make unpaid (or underpaid) opportunities more financially possible. Experiences lasting a minimum of 8 weeks & 240 hours are eligible for $2500, and a minimum of 10 weeks & 400 hours are eligible for $4000. Apply as soon as possible, as funding is first come first serve. The Faulty Student Collaborative Grant funds summer collaborative research between Colorado College faculty and students. Individual grants of $4,800 will cover one research student’s fellowship stipend (8 weeks). Student researchers conducting less than 8 weeks of research will receive a fellowship stipend of $600/week. Please contact Lisa Schwartz for more information. Check out other scholarships and grants that can help you fund research or coursework at the undergraduate level and can vary by department.

Aspiring research interns often use the excuse, “Easy for you to say—I’m not an expert at research” To explain why their applications aren't getting noticed by labs or professors. But it doesn't matter as much if you're starting with little to no experience. What matters much more is whether you bring potential and a genuine interest in research. Remember that every “expert” researcher started as a beginner, not an expert. So start today without feeling inferior for being a beginner. The only way you're going to become an expert researcher is by not self rejecting yourself because of being a beginner researcher right now. The idea of (and ability to) do a #internship during your #PhD training is a relatively new thing. However, it can open many doors and give you some great insights as you contemplate the next steps of your career. Getting data is never a bad thing! The Struggling Scientists Podcast has a nice episode about this.

Today, I saw a topic, and it said this: we will return to society, no matter how high the degree of education we have in the future. A degree is just a stepping stone to the enterprise. But the hardness of our stepping stone is not as good as theirs, so it more highlights the importance of internship to leave school in advance and enter the enterprise internship is very important for college students who are about to enter the society. Because in this way we can accumulate work experience and learn professional knowledge and social knowledge that can not be learned from textbooks. At the same time, we should also thank the school and teachers for stepping up the teaching plan of the school to free up time for our internship, so that we can learn more knowledge What do you think?
