Great News ahead! Thuvakkam’s yet another Urban Forest soon to develop in Hyderabad. Thuvakkam and GHMC has signed an MoU in creation of an Urban Forest at a size covering 43,600 sq.ft at KSR Layout, Serilingampally in Hyderabad. The forest would be created and maintained by Thuvakkam for a period of three years. This comes in effect right after the fifth Standing Committee of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), chaired by Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, convened on Thursday, September 12, to discuss development initiatives and approved 14 proposals. This would be Thuvakkam’s second forest in Hyderabad after the Kundikunta Lake Urban forest in Kondapur which was created at a size of 6500 sq ft, housing 1200 native tree saplings in it. India has lost 4.14 lakh hectares of humid primary forest from 2002 to 2023. The country is second highest worldwide, in terms of the rate of deforestation, which is at 6.68 hectares per year between 2015 and 2020. While the underlying reason could be either urbanisation or natural cause, the result is increase in temperature, greenhouse gases, pollution, and decrease in ground water level. Many global organisations and Indian environment forums are concentrating their efforts on promoting holistic sustainable development, one major focus sector being construction. Though the construction industry is roped into adopting green methods, more developers should follow suit to make green building mission a success, says Kirthi Chilukuri, Founder and CEO, Stonecraft Group. This group grew to fame as the biophilic developer, and eco-realtor who introduced the largest Miyawaki forest in Hyderabad. Woods Shamshabad is the city’s first layout project surrounded by 4.50 lakh trees, 150 native plants, 126 native fruit and flower trees, and a natural habitat for 141 species of birds. A study by IIT Bhubaneswar found that urbanization has led to 60% more night-time warming in over 140 Indian cities compared to surrounding non-urban areas. According to an analysis by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi, cities are not cooling down at night like they used to during 2001-2010 because they have "become more concretised in the last two decades" contributing to the rise in heat stress. According to the World Resources Institute (WRI) India Ross Center, seven out of 10 people around the world are projected to live in urban areas by 2050. Currently, 36 per cent of India's population, or about 40 crore, is urban and will double to 80 crore by 2050, according to the WRI India Ross Center. Across various Governments of different places Per capita green space in cities is a topic that has common-ness and some deviant ness (like India Govt measures plantations and orchards also as Green cover) . In a last week affidavit India Govt stated Delhi has 11.95 Sq mtr , Mumbai 6.01. On southern side Hyderabad/Bluru at 10.55. Chennai , Kolkata lower side... There is a 3-30-300 rule of town planning where states every house should see three trees , 30% of total area should be green and within 300 mtrs a park. Not known at this metrics , where does different cities stand .
