The media industry faces challenges in responsibly integrating AI technology, particularly with generative AI like ChatGPT. Northwestern University, supported by a Knight Foundation grant, aims to develop best practices for news organizations using generative AI. Professors Diakopoulos and Gilbert believe AI can enhance journalism, but proper adoption is crucial. The initiative, GAIN, will focus on local news outlets, bridging the gap in understanding and exploring the potential of generative AI in news production.

Many journalists may be feeling divisive about artificial intelligence. On one hand, they may be eager to dive into the endless stream of information, wanting to grasp everything about AI. But on the other hand, they may also have an urge to escape all the buzz and never even hear the term “ChatGPT” again. There is much online discourse around how AI will either revolutionize or destroy journalism and that adds up to a vast amount of information for journalists to sort through. The content is often either overly complex, endlessly repetitive, or simply unhelpful. It can be difficult to find information that strikes the right balance of being concise, clear, and genuinely useful. AI’s role in journalism is still very much evolving and very few people can call themselves true experts on the topic. Even so, there are a select few voices showing up amidst the clutter that offer thoughtful perspectives in the form of newsletters. These writers are providing a much-needed service by exploring the implications of AI on journalism with insight, skepticism, and nuance. AI guidelines and principles are worthless if they are not anchored in the organizational structure and processes. What we need is organizational AI governance in the media. In my article, I develop a model of how this could be achieved. Thanks to Natali Helberger for the theoretical basis to which I refer and Abeba Birhane from the AI Accountability Lab (AIAL) at Trinity College Dublin for her interview. https://lnkd.in/eqMaJrJx

As newsrooms around the world have pivoted to cover the rapid advancements in generative #AI, reporters often face challenges in finding resources to help them understand and convey the complexities of AI to a non-technical audience. This can result in distorted coverage around AI’s real-world implications. In response, the Notre Dame-IBM Technology Ethics Lab is partnering with the Pulitzer Center to introduce the AI Spotlight Series. This new initiative is designed to equip journalists with the skills to approach AI coverage through an accountability lens – and empowering journalists to report on AI with depth and nuance. While similar initiatives have focused on the use and integration of AI tools in the newsroom, the AI Spotlight Series is a first-of-its-kind program aimed at enhancing the quality of AI coverage. On Wednesday, I participated as a panelist in the ‘AI Special’ webinar by InPublishing with the aim of exploring how AI can assist newsrooms. 💡 They also asked me for three tips for adopting AI in the newsroom and, in my opinion, these are the most important: 💰 Stop believing that large financial investments are needed to adopt AI in the newsroom. There are use cases within the reach of all newsrooms and, above all, you can start with small experiments and then scale up to larger volumes. In Atex, we are organizing an initiative to promote exactly this aspect. Stay tuned! 🆘 Do not implement AI just for the sake of market attractiveness and newsworthiness but implement the right solution for your newsroom. To do this, it is necessary to think in terms of the product: first understand what problems need to be solved and then, possibly, understand whether or not AI can help to solve these problems. 🗣 Actively involve the editorial staff in these choices. Those who really know the day-to-day problems are the journalists who work on the news every day and not the managers who supervise the work. This will avoid the shock of having solutions implemented ‘from above’ and will also help make the content more appealing to a wider audience. "Meanwhile news organisations’ use of AI technologies continues to increase across all categories, with back-end automation (60%) considered very important by publisher respondents, many of whom have rolled out AI toolkits to support new workflows this year. The vast majority (87%) say that newsrooms are being fully or somewhat transformed by Gen AI, with just 13% saying not so much or not at all." https://lnkd.in/erFr55EM
