Let’s Talk Tuesday: Navigating the Dynamic Relationship Between RNs and Doctors: A Personal Reflection @highlight As a retired surgeon who has traversed the realms of both nursing and medicine, I find myself reflecting on the intricacies of the relationship between Registered Nurses (RNs) and Medical Doctors. The dichotomy between these two vital healthcare roles is a fascinating tapestry woven with threads of experience, authority, and knowledge. In the realm of patient care, RNs often stand as the unsung heroes with their wealth of hands-on experience and intimate connections with those under their care. Their dedication and expertise are invaluable in ensuring the well-being of patients, making them the backbone of the healthcare system. However, despite this wealth of experience, there exists a hierarchical structure where the doctor, regardless of age, holds the final decision-making power. I have encountered instances where seasoned RNs, brimming with years of experience, challenge the authority of younger doctors. Age, it seems, does not always correlate with hierarchy in the medical world. The doctor, with their specialized training and clinical acumen, is bestowed with the responsibility of making crucial decisions in the patient's care, a weighty mantle that transcends age or years spent in the field. Furthermore, the dynamic between RNs and doctors is not devoid of challenges. Egos and personalities can sometimes clash, leading to friction in an environment where teamwork is paramount. I have witnessed instances where RNs, perhaps feeling overshadowed, resort to belittling behaviors towards doctors based on their age or perceived lack of experience. Such instances underscore the importance of fostering mutual respect and collaboration in the healthcare setting. In the grand tapestry of healthcare, both RNs and doctors play indispensable roles, each bringing a unique set of skills and knowledge to the table. While RNs may excel in practical, hands-on care, doctors bring a depth of theoretical understanding and decision-making prowess that complements the nursing care provided. Ultimately, the relationship between RNs and doctors is a symbiotic one, where collaboration, respect, and a shared commitment to patient well-being form the cornerstone of effective healthcare delivery. It is through recognizing and celebrating the strengths of each role that we can truly harness the power of teamwork in the noble pursuit of healing. #HealthcareDynamics #NurseDoctorRelationship #TeamworkInMedicine #RN #LPN #NP #MD #surgeon #registerednurse #blacksurgeon #blackdoctors #healthcareprofessionals #femalephysicians #blackphysicians #highlightseveryone #EVERYBODY #highlightseveryone

How do I become a #CRNA? This is a question that I get asked A LOT. So here ya go.. 1. Take all of your nursing pre-recs and try to do as well as you possibly can 💯 YES these courses matter, too 2. Go to nursing school & kick it’s butt. Do whatever you have to do to get the best experiences + best GPA possible. It is up to you whether or not you want to go straight for your BSN (what I did) or get your ADN first & work as a nurse while getting your bachelor’s degree. BUT you will NEED your BSN to apply for anesthesia school. 3. Get 1-2 years minimum of ICU experience at a facility where you have to manage extremely sick patients (I personally recommend getting experience at a Level 1 Trauma center bc regardless of which ICU you work in, they care for the sickest of the sick + you see more complex cases). I think that getting at least 2 years of ICU experience is a good idea- in the ICU you see and learn something new daily, and this knowledge & experience will be invaluable as a nurse anesthetist 👩🏼⚕️. 4. While working as an ICU nurse, take the hardest patients, and say yes to any extra experiences. Get certified in your specialty + as a CCRN. 5. While working in the unit, take the GRE, if required for the school(s) you are applying to. 6. Shadow a CRNA (or multiple CRNAs). CRNA school is a HUGE commitment...so make sure you love it. Shadowing is great for your resume, plus, it is smart to start seeing things that you will be learning about. 7. Apply to your program(s) of choice. Be aware of the clinical experiences they each offer & the cost of the program. Note: working is not recommended for the 3 years you are in the program & most programs have minimal vacation/sick time. 8. Interview. Wear a suit, be prepared (know about YOUR specialty well + vasoactive drips + devices that you frequently use). Be short & to the point w your answers- so that you don’t dig yourself into a hole- if you don’t know the answer, admit it & say what resource you would use to find the answer. 9. GET ACCEPTED . . Addressing Surgical RNFA Hiring Issues The U.S. healthcare industry faces significant challenges in hiring qualified Registered Nurse First Assistants (RNFAs). These professionals are crucial for enhancing surgical care quality, improving patient outcomes, and ensuring surgical procedure efficiency. However, hospitals and surgery centers often struggle to find and hire these skilled professionals. The Demand for RNFAs RNFAs are essential in assisting surgeons, providing direct patient care, and ensuring optimal surgical outcomes. According to the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), they reduce surgical times, minimize complications, and improve patient care quality. Despite their importance, many facilities face difficulties in recruiting RNFAs due to a limited supply and a competitive job market. This week is Perioperative Nurses Week which is an excellent opportunity to dive into the complexities of perioperative nursing. Too often, this role is seen as purely technical, but it’s time to bring out the hidden layers that make perioperative nurses essential thinkers and leaders in healthcare. Each day, I'll be sharing a different perspective—uncovering skills that reach far beyond what most people see. Today’s Focus: Perioperative nursing is so much more than just a “technical role.” Sure, we’re the hands that pass instruments and position patients, but what really defines us is our ability to think strategically under pressure, maintain system-wide safety, and adapt to constantly evolving challenges in the OR. A few things people rarely consider: 👉 Decision-Making on the Fly: We constantly make real-time choices that balance patient safety, surgeon needs, and complex OR protocols. This isn’t just “following orders”; it’s critical thinking in action. 👉 Systemic Safety Checks: Each step we take—whether prepping a sterile set-up or positioning a patient—follows a protocol that ensures no detail is overlooked. Our actions protect patients, the team, and the OR environment. 👉 Cross-Functional Communication: Effective surgery requires precise communication with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical techs. Our work often involves bridging gaps between disciplines to ensure everyone’s on the same page and working towards a shared goal - the safety and experience of our patients. Being a perioperative nurse means understanding every moving part, noticing patient changes, anticipating needs, and responding without hesitation. This isn’t a reactive role—it’s proactive and strategic. Let’s start giving perioperative nurses the recognition they deserve—not just as skilled hands, but as essential thinkers and leaders in healthcare. #PerioperativeNursesWeek #HealthcareLeadership #SystemsThinking #CriticalThinking #SafetyInSurgery #ThoughtLeadership #InnovationInHealthcare #PerioperativeNursing #CrossFunctionalSkills
