Why is Design Transdisciplinary? From its inception, design has defied boundaries. It's no surprise that we, as designers, have always struggled with defining it and positioning it among sciences, arts, and other fields. Our methodologies and epistemologies are born from this very intersection. As the world rapidly evolves, so must design education. The curriculum we follow needs to reflect new tools, concepts, and shifting market dynamics. This flexibility is crucial, allowing us to adapt and create with fresh, contemporary perspectives. But beyond just adapting, we must ask: how can we foster a more inclusive design practice? To truly push boundaries, we need to incorporate knowledge from diverse regions and cultures, especially those from the Global South, like Latin America. These perspectives are vital to building design systems that reflect the complexity and diversity of our world. How can we, as designers, challenge the status quo and rethink the dominance of Global North-centered frameworks? #Design #Transdisciplinarity #Decolonization #GlobalSouth #LatinAmericanDesign

What is more-than-human design? As someone who has designed learning for humans for 15 years, this concept seemed an odd one to consider at first. Why would I need to think beyond the human? When training to teach, we were taught to centre the individual and their needs. When learning to design professional learning, I was encouraged to consider the needs of the collective teams I worked with. And yet, these needs are various. Whose needs would I prioritise? And whose needs would I neglect as a result? Narrowing my focus to an individual, a team, or a school, means isolating them from all the factors and influences that surround them. It means forgetting about the bigger picture of the world’s interconnectedness and fosters an outlook that places humans at the height of intelligence, and in such a hierarchy, it is dominant cultures and identities that are prioritised. Today's thought-provoking read from Michael Kibedi encourages contemplation of the various harms created by an approach to design that has positioned humans at the summit of an extractive hierarchical system that leads us to believe we have automatic rights to all else in our pursuit of ‘progress’. Michael's words have left me wondering about aims to dismantle systemic discrimination and harms in society and education. If we're to do so, perhaps it's necessary to begin with a repositioning of humans at the top of the hierarchy. As I shift to a new plane of understanding of what ethical and inclusive design might look like, I'll be keeping Michael's words close at hand: ‘Imagining better futures must not replicate the structural oppression, epistemic erasure, or ecological vandalism that our current human-centred approaches have facilitated.’ Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/eZuf42pG #learningdesign #design #inclusivedesign #inclusion Image: A background image of buildings and a billboard that reads: There are black people in the future. When I studied Industrial Design at university, I expected to learn how to design products and experiences. What I didn’t realise was that I was actually learning: 1️⃣ I didn’t subscribe to continuing industrialisation, pollution, extraction, and exploitation. 2️⃣ You can add significant value to business and economics through design thinking and systems thinking. 3️⃣ How to design anything—including my own life. Through these approaches, I discovered how to manage complexity and get to the root of challenges. This has empowered me to avoid short-term traps and embrace long-term thinking and values alignment. The freedom to design my own life? It’s both exhilarating and a little wild! 🌟 We can choose to design our own experiences or live a life designed for us. I choose to tread my own path. Yes, it can be uncertain, but isn’t that the essence of being alive? Shouldn’t there be some risk, some fun and a little chaos - for that’s where the magic often lies! Let’s embrace the journey and take charge of the design principles that define all aspects of our lives, the institutions we work for and how we impact the lives of others and the environment that supports us 💪✨ If you want things to be different, be different! #DesignThinking #LifeDesign #SystemsThinking #Empowerment

🅦🅐🅝🅣 🅑🅔🅣🅣🅔🅡 🅓🅔🅢🅘🅖🅝🅢? (Forget about disciplines!) In our increasingly complex world, traditional disciplinary boundaries in design are too limiting. It's crucial to embrace a post-disciplinary approach, where these boundaries dissolve to foster full creative fluidity. Here's why: Holistic Understanding: Life isn't segmented by discipline—our experiences are unified and cohesive. ➟ Recognize that separating disciplines is merely a simplification for easier comprehension. Enhanced Creativity: When barriers are removed, the cross-pollination of ideas leads to innovative solutions. ➟ Utilize diverse perspectives to deeply root designs in their socio-economic-cultural contexts. Human-Centered Outcomes: Beyond disciplines, design can truly focus on creating human-centered results. ➟ Aim to transform the design narrative, making it more inclusive and reflective of real human experiences. Efficiency in Complexity: Tackle complex challenges by applying multiple disciplines simultaneously. ➟ Adopt a novel way of thinking where the interplay between different fields can be fully explored. Adaptive Solutions: Solutions that transcend traditional boundaries are more adaptable to changing environments. ➟ Create designs that are not only innovative but also versatile and capable of evolving. Let's break the silos to build a more connected and creative world. What are your thoughts on adopting a post-disciplinary approach in design? Have you experienced the benefits first-hand? #CreativeDesign #Innovation #HumanCenteredDesign #Interdisciplinary #DesignThinking -- Enjoy this? ♻️ Share the post with others and follow me for more. 🔔

Sharing knowledge to elevate oneself. The popular quote "we rise by lifting others" by Robert Ingersoll has encouraged individuals around the world to recognise that their own growth and progress are linked to the growth and progress of those around them. As designers, we're constantly striving to improve our skills and create innovative solutions. One often overlooked way to enhance our abilities is by sharing our knowledge with others. Today, i will highlight four ways sharing your expertise can help you become a better designer 1️⃣Teaching solidifies your understanding: By explaining design concepts to others, you'll reinforce your own knowledge and identify areas for personal growth. 2️⃣ Sharing sparks new ideas: Discussing design principles and experiences with others can lead to fresh perspectives and inspiration for your own projects. 3️⃣Mentoring fosters a culture of collaboration: By guiding fellow designers, you'll build a network of peers who can offer valuable feedback and support. 4️⃣Giving back to the community drives industry progress: Sharing your expertise contributes to the collective growth of the design community, pushing the boundaries of what's possible. One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. Proverbs 11:24 Let's elevate the design community together! Share your knowledge, learn from others, and watch your skills flourish. Follow me for more talks about design, learning resources/ tips and leadership contents. I am rooting for you!💪🚀 #knowledge #collaboration #design #designtips

Dominance. World-class. These words may seem farfetched, but they are easier to achieve than they appear. Mastery is the art of knowing by studying and doing. Practice makes world-class designers, developers, engineers—anything you name it, practice can improve it. There is no finish line, only continuous improvement. Being ahead of the improvement curve makes you world-class. Being the individual who induces change or steers development is what dominance is. The world is yours. Practice until it becomes clear. #Leadership #ContinuousImprovement #Mastery #Innovation #WorldClass #PracticeMakesPerfect #CareerDevelopment #ProfessionalGrowth #BeTheChange #SuccessMindset #Dominance #design #designinpretation #digital #digitalillustration #illustration #globe
