The October Scaries: A Tale of a Seasonal Business Owner It's cold in the North East of England, there's no hiding it. You can see your breath if you go out early enough most mornings and my diesel van is starting to make it's characteristic winter grumble. As my first year running our #communityinterestcompany, Adaptive Ocean Academy (AOA) full time, rolls to a close and our customers trickle off for warmer pursuits, the 'what now?' panic settles in. What am I good at besides surf coaching? There are two strong contenders to answer my question, disability support and #grantwriting. Since I turned 18 I have travelled as a support worker, learning different countries systems, and implementing all the best bits into my practice. I'm thrilled to now be starting some part time work with a family I met through the adaptive surf lessons! Grant writing... Well, I avoided grant writing for so long. The fear of a rejection for the surf school felt equal to a personal rejection. I eventually decided to ask The National Lottery Community Fund for £18,000. I poured every ounce of passion I have for disability equity and belief in the benefits of my project out and started writing. This isn't a scary story, the grant was awarded! Securing this first grant turned AOA from a hobby, into a thriving organisation. It funded adaptive coach hours and an adaptive surfboard, but most of all it gave me belief that there is something in this project. Now I want to help other social entrepreneurs bring their visions to life. I know how time consuming admin can be when you're trying to run every other part of your start up. I'll tell you what so many have told me, you and your idea deserve backing, you're putting in so much hard work and you can be rewarded, if you just look in the right places.
