I stole a horse when I was a kid. It didn’t have much grass in its paddock, and I thought that was animal cruelty, so my sisters and I “relocated it” a few blocks down the road to somewhere greener. The worst that happened to us was the owner of the horse tracked it down and gave my poor embarrassed mother a few choice words. If at any point someone had cable tied my hands while I was crying for my Mum, you just know it would have been front page news. The fact that First Nations children are being treated this way in 2024 is beyond shameful. First of all – it doesn’t matter what they were doing, they are children. End of story. Even if, as reported in the media, a tradie visiting the house decided a “crime” of trespass was in progress, that does not justify this response. These were tiny kids, swimming in a pool on a bloody hot day. We urgently need to talk as a country about racism and the impact on kids and families as this situation reveals. It's also worth examining the wider context of why the kids might have been there. The lack of public pool facilities is a social accessibility issue across the country. There aren’t enough facilities, and pools along with shade will play an increasingly vital role as the climate warms. Lack of access impacts people who are socioeconomically disadvantaged the most. That’s another conversation we should be having. There is no justification for abusing or criminalising kids for being kids. This is not an issue of trespass. It’s an issue of social exclusion and racism, and it must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
A relative of two Indigenous children who were detained with zip-ties says the children were allegedly bound so tight they were bleeding when they were found.

This incident lasted an hour. (NOT including K9 track, arrest processing, reports, finding parents/guardians, follow-up investigation, statements, towing, etc.) Imagine the costs. Time, pay, people, equipment, property damage, lives disrupted, other 911 calls and crimes delayed or left unanswered, victims left traumatized. The case will disappear into Family Court, where the victims are not allowed to know what happened to it. The victims are left wondering forever what happened; their lives disrupted, left to pick up the pieces and somehow pay for all the damage. The suspects are likely already back on the street. How long must #newyorkstate communities wait for lawmakers to do SOMETHING? Please visit ourconsortiumny.com to help urge members of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly to fix the flaws in bail laws that allow incidents like this to continue to cost all of us. The CSC is asking that risk-to-public safety (dangerousness) and repeat offender standards be added to bail law that enable judges to detain defendants long enough to intervene and redirect their lives -- shelter, housing, social services, education, rehabilitation, food, job training, etc. #AmsterdamNY #binghamtonny #AlbanyNY #rochesterny #buffalo #syracuse #auburnny #adirondacks #HudsonValley #mohawkvalley #elmirany #bataviany #oleanny #watertownny #oneidany #oswego #fortdrum #FLX #FingerLakes #LongIsland #police #cops #lawenforcement #firstresponders #crime #NewYork #NYC https://lnkd.in/gBtBF2E3

Forty-one years ago, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed this date as National Missing Children’s Day. On this date in 1979, a six year old named Etan Patz disappeared when he was on his way to school. He was never found and sadly was declared legally dead in 2001. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to doing what we can in terms of missing children. There are some things you can do to help be prepared in case this event ever occurs. Always have an updated frontal view picture of your children. Also keep a record of height, weight, distinguishing characteristics and any need-to-know medical information. Make sure to update your photographs and information every six months. If you find your child has gone missing, there are several things you can do. First, look thoroughly throughout the location to make sure the child is not hiding. Once it has been determined they are missing, immediately call your local law enforcement. After you have reported your child missing to law enforcement, call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST.

Why has crime increased in Australia? Why is mace spray banned in Victoria, but not in WA? Talk to your children, make sure they stay alert and are highly aware of their surroundings and always travel in groups. A few of our going out rules: Who, what, why, when where and how? Who - will you be with, we need a contact. What- will you be doing? Where- we need a location? When- set a curfew, even if they are out of the house. They should know nothing good happens after midnight. How- will you get there and get back? Never let anyone buy your drinks not even if they're being nice and not even if they are your best friend, you don't know if they put it down. If you set it down, never pick it back up. Go to the toilet with a buddy or let someone know where you are going.
As missing posters of 19-year-old Isla Bell fade on walls and lamp posts around Melbourne, the community is trying to make sense of another senseless tragedy. Two men, aged 53 and 57, faced court on Wednesday over the alleged murder of the young woman who was supposed to celebrate her 20th birthday in October. When she went missing, loved ones hoped the public could help find her but that search has now turned to one for justice.

Time to refuse bail to dangerous abusers. Time to track and monitor all high-risk offenders. Time to increase men’s behaviour change programs, especially residential ones. Time for police to intervene early with perpetrators in all family violence cases. Time for a register of offenders. Time for right to know and right to ask about people suspected of being violent. Time to monitor the whereabouts of all men on 72 hour police orders. Time to ensure men are removed from homes if they are deemed high risk offenders.
It's been yet another tragic weekend with two women whose names are yet to be disclosed having been killed. The husband of one of the women, a 78-year-old woman from Canberra, is currently under police guard in hospital. Police say no other suspects are being sought. And in Darwin, a man has turned himself in and is assisting police concerning the death of a 36-year-old woman. The police say the man was 'known to the woman' which is generally a euphemism for current or former partner or a family member.

The systemic discrimination of women in Australia by Govt Services in #AusPol must be addressed to ensure fair & equitable employment & business opportunities for women. This starts with #Police #LawEnforcement so they can stay safe in their home or secure housing & access super for adequate safety net. So far token support only. Police Services in Australia are failing women. Women and their concerns are dismissed, devalued and trivialised. Importantly if women are forced from their homes or dismissed this is condoning, encouraging and enable the perpetrators. They are in fact rewarded while the women is punished. This is basic psychology. This also the consistent outcomes seen in intersectionality. Cultural norms allow #women to be unsafe, unprotected, unheard, unrepresented, unavenged, dismissed, devalued & trivialised. Now unacceptable in #AusPol #Police must support #OneStandard in procedures, protocols; #RuleofLaw to #breakthebias , violence against women & #Corruption Increasingly #women who lodge complaints or concerns of #discrimination, inappropriate conduct, ineffective practices with Govt Depts in #AusPol #NSWPol are being silenced, victimised, deemed aggressive or emotional reflecting bias rt due process recognising feedback $1500 - Cost of #Police to respond, report & act on initial complaints; $7.4mill - cost of death. $25 Mill - complex non fatal DV matter due to duplication & multiple agencies . Australian Police failing to address unlawful harm to #women & #children and failing to enforce is corruption. #AusPol #AusEcon save $$ #DoYourJob Women are in more danger from @QldPolice & @NSWPolice & State #Police due to discrimination in policy & treatment. The evidence of distrust, dismissal in due process for #women is shocking. #BreaktheBias & corruption with #onestandard in procedures & protocols #NSWPol #QldPol
