The ODS Population Studies Program evaluates dietary supplement use and its impact on nutritional status among people in the U.S. The program uses data from national surveys and large studies to conduct research and characterize emerging issues, such as changing patterns in the use of dietary supplements. It also addresses methodological issues in assessing dietary and supplement intakes. The program collaborates with federal agencies like CDC, FDA, NIH, and USDA to carry out its work. October 25th marks the 30-year anniversary of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). DSHEA established ODS at NIH with two purposes: 1) to explore the potential role of dietary supplements as a significant part of the efforts of the United States to improve health care; and 2) to promote scientific study of the benefits of dietary supplements in maintaining health and preventing chronic disease and other health-related conditions. FYI Dietary Supplement Industry Colleagues From ODS: ODS Strategic Plan 2025-2029 "Beginning in 1998 and updated periodically ever since, the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH’s) Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) has created and implemented a strategic plan based on its mandates and mission as provided by Congress and in tandem with the overarching mission of NIH to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability. The Strategic Plan 2025-2029 outlines a visionary framework for creating an expansive dietary supplement research agenda, which will promote greater collaboration and coordination of innovative dietary supplement research across NIH and the federal government. This plan also articulates ODS’ scientific priorities of diverse populations, healthy lifespan, and resilience, along with ODS’ primary goals: advance research, expand research capacity, and foster stewardship, collaboration, and accountability." #dietarysupplements

The following is a required disclaimer for dietary SUPPLEMENTS. "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, prevent, treat, or cure any disease." Meaning if your product has a NUTRITIONAL facts panel instead of a SUPPLEMENT facts panel AND you list this disclaimer, you're sending mixed messages to folks in the know. "For highly-susceptible rodents (aged models or Black 6 background strains), it may make sense to add a dietary supplement to the UD treatment procedure. Researchers have found a direct correlation between dietary fat and skin mast cell degranulation in female B6 mice, and low-fat rodent diets may improve the incidence of UD (1). Balanced fatty acids may play an important role in preventing and treating UD, and a dietary supplement can deliver an appropriate balance. In addition, researchers have looked at the relationship between a healthy gut and the incidence of dermatitis-like skin lesions. One study explored the oral administration of galactooligosaccharide (GOS), a prebiotic, in NC/Nga mice and found that, “mice fed GOS exhibited significantly less symptoms of dermatitis” (2).
