Today, April 16th, is National Healthcare Decisions Day - a day to encourage everyone to plan for their healthcare wishes. National Healthcare Decisions Day is recognized each year on the day after tax day to engage the American public in conversations about end-of-life healthcare planning. The goal is to get people to document their healthcare wishes and share them with their loved ones. Advance care planning includes completing an Advance Directive (also known as a living will) and appointing a Health Care Power of Attorney (someone to make healthcare decisions for you if you are unable to speak for yourself). This ensures your wishes are known and followed. The Conversation Project in Boulder County (TCPBC) provides free tools and resources to help start these important conversations. Visit https://lnkd.in/gBUYgAEB to get started. Don't wait - take the time tomorrow to plan ahead for your healthcare wishes. Facts About Healthcare Advanced Directives Life is unpredictable, and having your healthcare preferences clearly documented is a gift to yourself and your loved ones. Healthcare Advanced Directives provide clarity and peace of mind during medical crises. These documents protect your wishes and reduce the emotional burden on your family during challenging times. History of Healthcare Advanced Directives - Healthcare Advanced Directives originated from the Natural Death Act of 1976, introduced in California to allow individuals to make decisions about life-sustaining treatment. Patient Self-Determination Act (PSDA) - The Patient Self-Determination Act (PSDA) of 1990 significantly shaped the adoption of Healthcare Advanced Directives by requiring healthcare facilities to inform patients of their rights to execute such documents. An Essential Part of Estate Planning - National surveys show that only 33% of Americans have Healthcare Advanced Directives despite their importance (AARP, 2023). These documents complement your estate plan, ensuring holistic preparation for life’s uncertainties. Legally Binding Across All 50 States - Healthcare Advanced Directives are recognized in all U.S. states. While specific requirements vary by state, properly executed directives will ensure your instructions are honored wherever you reside or travel. National Data: A 2023 study by the Kaiser Family Foundation revealed that 75% of adults want their healthcare preferences documented, yet fewer than 37% have created Healthcare Advanced Directives. Healthcare Advanced Directives ensure your wishes are honored and your loved ones are supported during critical times. Take control of your healthcare decisions.
