Breeding - repeatability of traits Repeatability is a measure of the tendency of animals to maintain their ranking over time. It describes the accuracy with which early records of an animal's performance in a particular trait can predict its lifetime performance. Heat tolerance is a crucial trait in sheep, particularly in tropical climates. Researchers have found that individual differences in heat tolerance within the same breed significantly affect thermoregulation. To ensure the welfare of their sheep, farmers can prioritize heat tolerance in their breeding programs. Standard deviation and Variance in animal breeding Standard Deviation The Standard Deviation is a measure of how spread out numbers are. Its symbol is \(the greek letter sigma\) The formula is easy: it is the square root of the Variance. So now you ask, "What is the Variance?" Variance The Variance is defined as: The average of the squared differences from the Mean. To calculate the variance follow these steps: Work out the Mean \(the simple average of the numbers\) Then for each number: subtract the Mean and square the result \(the squared difference\). Then work out the average of those squared differences. Youtube video: https://lnkd.in/dWucimM4 \#nikolays_genetics_lessons

How to find if you can use a Population of Animals for Selective Breeding or not Selective breeding, also known as artificial selection, is a process used by humans to develop new organisms with desirable characteristics. Breeders select two parents that have beneficial phenotypic traits to reproduce, yielding offspring with those desired traits. Some consider domesticated animals to be the ultimate products of artificial selection. Thoroughbred racehorses are one example of artificial selection of animals. The meats we eat are the result of the careful selective breeding of cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens. Youtube video: https://lnkd.in/dYFctSex #nikolaysgeneticslessons

Cross breeding is a fundamental practice in both plant and animal husbandry, aimed at enhancing specific traits and improving overall genetic diversity within species. This process involves the intentional mating of two distinct individuals from the same species or closely related species to produce offspring with desirable characteristics. #GeneralAgriculture

Genetic modification (GM) in animal breeding represents a significant advancement in agricultural science, offering new ways to enhance animal traits and improve productivity. Traditionally, animal breeding relied on selective breeding, where individuals with desirable traits were chosen to produce the next generation. #GeneralAgriculture

Artificial Insemination (AI) is a reproductive technology widely used in animal breeding to improve genetic quality and increase production. Through this process, semen is collected from a male animal, typically one with desirable traits, and then artificially introduced into a female animal’s reproductive tract. #GeneralAgriculture
