💡 Quality isn’t just a step—it’s a mindset. 💡
Japan’s commitment to Total Quality Management (TQM) transformed it into a global economic powerhouse. What can agrarian economies learn from Japan's approach?
In 1989, while managing orchards, I learned the hard way that prioritizing quality—from the field to the market—can make or break success. Today, at Dream Valley, we apply those same principles, helping emerging markets thrive by raising standards in every stage of the agricultural value chain.

The Power to Shape Our World 🌍
In a world where words hold the power to inspire, transform, and create, it's vital to remember that the expression of ideas is not just a privilege—it's a responsibility. Every word spoken, every idea shared, has the potential to build a more beautiful, just, and prosperous world. But what happens when voices are silenced? When ideas are stifled?
I often reflect on the life of farmers in India—a life that’s steeped in tradition, resilience, and an unyielding connection to the land. Yet, when we compare it to the advancements in agricultural technology in Europe, the contrast is stark. The question arises: Why do such disparities exist? Who is responsible?
Perhaps, it's not just about the technology or resources, but about the voices that have remained unheard. The silence of those who could speak out, share ideas, and demand change. In a world where expression can drive innovation and equity, it’s imperative that we encourage free dialogue, especially about issues that deeply impact our communities.
So, I ask you—have you ever seen the life of a farmer in India? How does it compare to the agricultural technologies flourishing in Europe? And most importantly, how can we, as a collective, use our words, ideas, and voices to bridge this gap and build a better world?
Let’s ensure that no idea is left unspoken, and no voice goes unheard. 🌱

🤔 In 1989, I learned some of my most pivotal lessons in quality while managing fruit orchards.
Through hard-won experiences and early mistakes, I came to understand that quality is not a single step—it’s a journey that permeates every stage of production, from the field to the market.
In my latest column, I reflect on these lessons and dive into a powerful success story: how Japan's post-war commitment to Total Quality Management (TQM) transformed its economy, building a global reputation for excellence.
Japan’s dedication to quality shows us that a rigorous focus on standards can elevate an industry, drive economic growth, and even reshape a nation’s image.
At Dream Valley, we’re bringing this same commitment to quality to Africa and other emerging agrarian economies.
By focusing on quality control, certifications, and logistics, we’re helping farmers reach premium markets, increase their income per hectare, and improve livelihoods.
Why this matters: Non-exporting farmers in developing countries often see incomes per hectare between $50 and $500, while their exporting counterparts earn $5,000 to $50,000. This massive potential is why prioritizing quality is more than a strategy; it’s a pathway to prosperity.
Read on to learn more about Japan’s journey and how we’re applying these principles to empower farmers in emerging markets. 🌍💼📈

The Paradox of Growing as a Values-Driven Company
(by Suntae Kim and Todd Schifeling
March 04, 2024)
SUMMARY:
From organic farming to microbreweries, fair trade, and other sustainability-oriented movements, innovators are increasingly turning to market alternatives that explicitly prioritize social responsibility. But as these movements grow, they often face a catch-22: To maximize impact, they want to expand and include as many incumbent organizations in their movement as possible — but to remain authentic to their core values and avoid becoming coopted and diluted, it’s often necessary to exclude larger incumbents. In this article, the authors present new research on the B Corp Movement’s approach to inform strategies that can help leaders in any industry strike a balance between these competing demands and navigate the paradoxical imperatives to expand while staying true to their mission.
