Those pesky 'in perpetuity' clauses lurking in contracts are like the ghosts of agreements past, haunting your creative freedom forever! 👻
By signing off on “in perpetuity” in an agreement, you no longer have the right to use it or make money off of it – even decades later.

Looking to be in a #StarWars movie after you've passed onto the great beyond? 🤷♀️
As many of you know, the great Peter Cushing was featured in the original, iconic Star Wars movie. He passed away in 1994.
But magically, he recently made an appearance in Rogue One – which reportedly made over $1 Billion worldwide. 🤯
How did he appear in a movie after passing away, you ask?
The studio recreated him digitally for the movie.
The question is…
❓❓ Did the movie studio have the right to do that ❓❓
Not according to a new lawsuit brought by a company that says the movie studio violated a contract made with Peter Cushing before his death.
As reported (see link in comments), they claim Cushing gave them a veto over all recreations using his image after his death.
We’ll see how this plays out, but it brings up an important and interesting point that you can’t just use someone’s likeness without their permission, even after they’re no longer here.
Laws vary from state to state and country to country so it’s important to understand what you can and can’t do before blasting off into a galaxy far, far away. 😉 🚀
What do you think? Would you want someone to be able to use your image when you're gone?
Stay safe and stay legal! ⚖

After the High Court's landmark WaterRower ruling, WIPR spoke with Rachel Pearse (née Warren) of gunnercooke, a member of the winning team, to discuss the case's impact on designers.
The decision, delivered on November 11 by Deputy Judge Campbell-Forsyth, determined that WaterRower's wooden rowing machine does not qualify for copyright protection as an artistic work under English law.
