The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly represents a pivotal moment in the global push to advance the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since its adoption in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the SDGs aim to tackle pressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. The 2024 session highlights the importance of accelerating progress toward the SDGs, especially considering that the world is nearing the halfway mark toward the 2030 deadline. Many goals are off-track due to economic instability, conflicts, and the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. At Whitmore Consults Ltd, we remain committed to championing efforts towards SDG8 realisation.

Last week we were appointed to a new role by Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications thanks to Oilean Carter Stritch for doing the spadework on this 😀 ‘Wtf are the sustainable development goals’? Great question! They’re a set of goals created by the @unitednations to end poverty, protect the planet and allow people to experience real health and well-being. Through our own work with CCC, we’re focused on: 👀 SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth 👀 SDG 10: Reduced inequalities 👀 SDG 12: Responsible consumption & production 👀 SDG 13: Climate action We’re looking forward to sharing more about what we learn from other programme participants (who include @universitycollegedublin @toogoodtogo.ie @irishgirlguides + plenty more) over the coming year. #SDGsIRL

Proposed in 2012 and adopted in 2015, the United Nations created the Sustainable Development Goals ‘as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity’. SDG 13, or Goal 13, focuses on Climate Action and is about taking steps to combat climate change and its already devastating impact on our planet. This goal can be achieved if the increase in global mean temperature is limited to 1.5°c, but it requires us to make the changes necessary. Living in Worcester with our surroundings, it can be easy to forget the situation we are in – but by recognising the importance of SDG13 we can identify the changes we can make to be sustainable advocates for our city and our planet.
