Human Rights Day is celebrated around the world on December 10th every year. It focuses on the fundamental rights and liberties of people and advocates for the rights that transcend nationality, gender, ethnicity, race, sexuality, religion, or any other distinctions. Following World War II, there was a growing call to ensure that the atrocities committed during the war were not repeated. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. UDHR encapsulates the common standard that every country and person should strive for in terms of human rights. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was established on October 12, 1993. The Commission has also made several interventions on key issues of human rights which include child labour, prison reforms, right to health, right to food, mental healthcare, rights of persons with disability, sanitation, and rights of women. This year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future,” reminds us of the fundamental role of human rights in shaping a just society. Freedom of expression is an essential enabler of a well-functioning democracy. It allows civil society, the media, and citizens to hold government and corporate power accountable. #HumanRightsDay2024 #HumanRightsDay #HumanRights #PrisonReform #MentalHealthcare #EndFoodInsecirity #Sanitation #WomensRights #EndChildLabor #DisabilityRights #RightToHealth

The foundational pillars of the United Nations Child Rights Commission, encapsulated in four guiding principles, guide the application, implementation, and interpretation of the Convention. In practice, these four principles are interconnected, and cannot be applied without the consideration of another. These rights ensure protection against discrimination, guaranteeing the child's entitlement to survival, development, and the fundamental Right to be heard, thereby advocating for their holistic well-being and equitable treatment. Strong messages from National Human Rights Institutions and National Equality Bodies from across Europe calling for stronger protection of social rights and for stronger commitment from Council of Europe member states to the European Social Charter, the Social Constitution of Europe. The message, pointing to a number of areas of particular concern (#youth, #housing, #poverty, etc) is all the more important given the status, mandates and standing of European #Ombuds institutions #ENNHRI European Network of National Human Rights Institutions and Equinet, European Network of Equality Bodies

Good luck to local authority colleagues in the run up to the #GeneralElection. A plea from the Adult Support Sector: please promote inclusive elections. #Disabled people have the same right to vote as people without a disability, and Government decisions affect them - the attack on PIP just one example, and of course funding! #MyVoteMyVoice campaign provides accessible information and resources for people with learning disabilities, #Autistic people and other support needs, including a very handy voting passport that can make the actual process easier for both polling station staff and the person with LD. My area of interest is LD, but obviously the same applies for other disabilities. https://lnkd.in/eVDFCtqV #AccessibleElections #Accessibility #Inclusion #InclusiveElections
