Do you ever wonder why you never feel good enough? This revelation may change your perspective. I’m a fan of hip-hop/rap music. I like many artists, with Drake being my favorite. It’s common in hip-hop/rap for artists to talk about their struggles. They channel their emotions and their thoughts into a work of art. In 2018, I was dealing with a ton of mental and emotional struggles. I was looking to music for an escape from everyday life. I was scrolling through social media and stumbled across an artist named Russ. A lot of the music he was putting out really resonated with me. He was clearly going through mental and emotional struggles when I listened to his lyrics. Throughout the years, I followed his journey from afar. Recently, he released his second book titled It Was You All Along. Russ reveals everything about the mental/emotional/physical journey he’s gone through the past few years. He started receiving mental health services to unpack his thoughts and emotions. Russ struggled with perfectionism for his entire life. He made millions of dollars. He made multiple platinum records. He sold out shows across the globe. He dated models. But he never felt like it was good enough. In a session with his therapist, he was introduced to a fantastic concept. As a fellow mental health professional, I have to tip my cap to his therapist and share it with you all. If accomplishing your goals never feels enough for you, this may be why. EXTERNAL RECOGNITION-INTERNAL RECOGNITION=IMPOSTER SYNDROME. Perfectionism and imposter syndrome run rampant among high achievers. This can be tricky because you’ve probably convinced yourself that you need to be so critical in order to achieve great things. When you’re overly self-critical to where you can’t give yourself credit for your accomplishments, no amount of recognition from others will fill that void. You’ll always be searching for the next thing to feel good enough. When in reality, you’re the only person who can fix that problem. You must have often heard the word 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐨 and felt the mental image behind this term, 𝐀 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐟𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, But did you ever think, that macho, is a word that perceives men as physically strong, but also in that process judges them on their masculinity when they express their concerns, So are we saying as a society that focussing on emotional and mental wellness isn't being macho Well! Then let's change this age old storytelling of a man. Be it physical, mental or emotional, a man who addresses each of these aspects of his life, is the one who is truly a human, It's neither about gender nor sexuality. Emotions, feeling and vulnerability are a normal traits of a human and one must strike a balance amongst the three holistically. Lets not attach any stigma to the most basic trait of a human being; which is expressing Let us create safe spaces where everybody would want to work on your holistic fitness.
