A new End of Life Care service funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and supported by Social Finance launches today demonstrating once again how social investment can be mobilised to improve patient outcomes in health and social care. The Harrogate End of Life Planning and Support Service (HELPSS) is being led by the Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, in partnership with Saint Michael's Hospice, and Airedale NHS Foundation Trust. HELPSS can support anyone who is living with a palliative diagnosis or may be approaching the last year of life in the Harrogate locality. HELPSS provides the opportunity for discussion with a healthcare professional about wishes and preferences both now and in the future and 24 hours a day with 7 days a week telephone advice and support (Goldline). It’s the fourth service of its kind across the UK to be supported by the Macmillan End of Life Care Fund. How do we help sick kids get home from hospital and back to the things they miss? By ensuring our funding supports key areas research has shown to be effective in improving health outcomes for our young patients across Australia. Through our national alliance of eight children's hospitals, foundations and paediatric services who direct funds raised in the state back to the areas of greatest need, we are able to deliver local impact and create meaningful engagement with communities across Australia. We do this through targeted funding towards: 1. Improving the 'In hospital experience' for sick kids facing a hospital visit or stay. 2. Improving the 'In hospital treatment' so kids may go home sooner. 3. Proximity/In home treatment – allowing sick kids to be treated closer to or at home. 4. Preventing Hospitalisation – funding projects that proactively aim to keep children out of hospital. On 10th July, together with my workmates, I will take part in a fundraising walk organised by Aviva Investors and charity Action for A-T in support of children affected by Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T). This cause is very close to my heart and so I’m grateful to have the support of the Disability Network at Aviva Investors and 65 colleagues who are taking on this challenge to raise awareness and funds to support medical research to help advance a cure. A-T is rare in the population – yet it can happen to anyone – and when it does it is devastating for families affected. Is there a financial upside to charity in healthcare? My friends and I volunteer monthly as a group tradition, and during a recent visit to Tesfa Addis Parents Childhood Cancer Organization (TAPCCO), I saw an unexpected answer to that question. TAPCCO provides free housing, transportation, counseling, nutrition, and education for children in cancer treatment, a lifeline for many. But here’s what shocked me: Only 30% of Ethiopian children with cancer complete their treatment without support….largely because 70% have nowhere to stay during their care. That’s where TAPCCO steps in, bridging this critical gap. 1. Today, there are estimated to be around 81,000 people globally who are newly diagnosed with CML each year. Global health disparities disproportionately affect outcomes for people with CML in low income countries. This problem is amplified by the fact that CML is predicted to become the most prevalent leukaemia by 2040, when there are projected to be over three million patients worldwide. This summer a team of six riders are Riding for a Cure across the French Alps - 710km with an astonishing 16,600m of climbing. As they cycle, they'll be raising money for the iCMLf. My social impact journey radically evolved four years ago when my second daughter was born with a congenital heart defect (TGA, trans-position of the great arteries). The condition is not survivable without major open-heart surgery, during which your child is placed on a heart-lung bypass machine and all four arteries plus the coronaries are removed and "rewired" into the correct arterial chambers. Not many surgeons in the US can perform the surgery. Indra and I just happened to live within 20 miles of four of them. We were blessed and today Laila is a lively, ornery, and adorable four-year old. The event forced a lot of reflection, and eventually I determined that I wanted to expand my work in social impact beyond disaster response, humanitarian relief, and veterans advocacy. My experiences put me face to face with other critical social issues - - access to healthcare: if Laila was born in any of the countries I spent my early twenties in she would have died. If she'd been born in many of the communities TR has served in throughout the US, where access to quality healthcare is limited, she might have died. - income inequality: I saw countless parents who couldn't spend as much time with their children in the pediatric cardiothoracic unit because they had to choose between their jobs and their child. No one should face that choice. - cost of healthcare: our total bill was over $1.2 million, but we were covered. Still, in looking at the itemized bills we received it became clear just how broken our system is. Obviously these are only three, but as I zoomed out I realized just how much work there is to do to make our local and global communities stronger. I came to the conclusion that it was time to move on from the day to day at Team Rubicon and go charge the next hill, which would become Groundswell. We're excited to build a product that is helping companies, communities, and charities change the world. But more than anything, I'm excited to celebrate Laila's fourth year of life. #socialimpact #csr #corporatesocialresponsibility

Meet Maryam! 💙 "I'm Maryam, a 16-year-old living in the cozy city of Fredericton, New Brunswick. Life threw me a curveball right after my 14th birthday, when I got hit with the news: type 1 diabetes was now part of the picture.  For the past two years, I've found solace and strength in participating in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. It's more than just a walk for me. It's a symbol of hope and unity. When I put on those walking shoes, it's not just about me. It's about everyone out there facing the same battles as me.  Raising funds for research is crucial because it's not just about my journey with T1D; it's about the collective hope for a brighter future. #ThrowbackThursday to our donation to Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust! The Trust has had Modernising Outpatients program in place for two years prior to covid, that had been improving all aspects of the outpatient experience from IT equipment to new processes. They had been heading towards a hybrid model for consultations with a split between telephone, video and face-to-face - a trend which they expect to see continuing. With the onset of Covid, they knew virtual was here to stay and were faced with a new set of challenges, considering the best use of their outpatient real estate and what proportion of their services to take virtual, targeting 25% of initial calls and 60% of follow ups.  Sheffield Children’s turned to Spacestor Healthcare for a solution, trialing three different virtual consultation pods in two locations with a view to conducting A/B/C testing to see which solution was most successful. Spacestor were glad to donate one of these pods to such a good cause! Protecting space for face-to-face consultations was a top priority for the Trust, so using individual pods with a small footprint provided more spaces for virtual clinics, increasing operational efficiency.
