Brief note about the program: @MoE's Innovation Cell Availability of the programme in online mode has been arranged by MoE – IC for all the educational institutions of India. In Nalla Malla Reddy Engineering College, Director Dr Divya Nalla and the Principal Dr MNV Ramesh initiated the programme to get arranged in the classrooms for the students to be aware of it. IIC Convenor Dr Bhaskar Patnaik made an arrangement for the programme in the classrooms through IIC Cooridnators and members. ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat’ is under one of the pertains of “Make in India” scheme, to fabricate and utilize our own semiconductors. The programme was inagurated by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji via video conferencing. Prime Minister addressed the gathering, all over India and laid the foundation stone for three semiconductor projects worth about Rs 1.25 lakh crores, which are specially meant for semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat, and Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT), in Morigaon, Assam, and Sanand, Gujarat. The Prime Minister emphasized the significance of these projects in making India a semiconductor hub, acknowledging the virtual presence of industry players from Taiwan. He highlighted the role of semiconductor technology in India's self-reliance and modernization efforts, aiming to lead Industry 4.0. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of a reliable semiconductor supply chain, underlining India's ambition to play a crucial role in it. He mentioned various policy measures aimed at simplifying regulations and fostering growth in the electronics and hardware manufacturing sectors. Also he expressed confidence that these projects would create numerous job opportunities, particularly for the youth. He underscored India's progress across various fronts, including defense, space, and technology, signaling a move towards a self-reliant India. The event was attended by Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, and industry leaders. These projects align with the Prime Minister's vision to position India as a global semiconductor hub, creating employment opportunities for the youth and strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem.

Explainer: How India’s ambitious semiconductor journey is taking shape As India begins its semiconductor electronics manufacturing journey amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “it is right time to be in India” call, the reformist government, a growing manufacturing base in Bharat, and a huge aspirational market can help realise the mega chip dream. To begin with, about Rs 1.52 lakh crore (nearly $18 billion) worth of investments have come in India’s semiconductor manufacturing space in a short span of time and several projects are already in the pipeline. The construction of two semiconductor units is in full swing (Micron’s plant in #Gujarat and #Tata_Electronics’ unit in Assam) and the work will soon commence on the three more units in the country. According to industry experts, the country could receive up to $30 billion investment in the sector in the next three-four years which would further bolster its position in the global supply chain. In March this year, #PM #Modi laid the foundation stone of three semiconductor projects worth Rs 1.25 lakh crore. As per reports, India’s semiconductor-related market will reach $64 billion in 2026, nearly triple the size in 2019. Towards achieving this goal, the ‘Semicon India’ initiative allows financial support for front-end fabrication units, display fabs, semiconductor packaging, compound semiconductors, sensors, and display manufacturing. Semiconductors is a foundational industry. With the advent of artificial intelligence (#AI), chips are being used in medical instruments, mobile phones, laptops, cars, trucks, trains, televisions and practically every device on earth India is a major consumer of chips and has built the world’s best digital public infrastructure (#DPI) on this chip. This small chip is playing a significant role in ensuring last-mile delivery in Bharat. Whether it is the unified payments interface (#UPI), #RuPay_card, #Digi_Locker, or Digi Yatra, various digital platforms have become part of everyday life. The demand for data centres in the country is continuously rising and these run on chips. Experts say that by expanding production capacity, the country is poised to become a major player in the sector. National initiatives, such as the Semicon India Programme and the India Semiconductor Mission (#ISM), are focused on capturing a significant share of the global market, driving innovation, and stimulating economic growth through job creation and technological advancement. Is India the only country subsiding its semiconductor industry? No. All countries that depend on this industry are subsiding to grow further. Except India, all these countries invested and benefited heavily from their previous investments. India needs to double down to catch up. India is the only country capable of 5-10X growth in the next 10 years. The US invented most of the semiconductor and packaging technologies but transferred their manufacturing to lower cost regions of the world, like Malaysia, China and Taiwan .These countries in time became so dominant as to produce better than 80% of all electronics. I recently participated in two panel sessions at the largest IEEE ECTC packaging conference in Denver. The participants were from US, Europe, Japan and Korea. I represented India. The US Chips act at> $50 B is well known with two parts; $39 for manufacturing of leading- edge and mature technologies and $11B for R&D , prototyping of semiconductors and packages, As many of you know, Japan was the best in manufacturing until 1989. The last IC node it produced was 14nm. Its company, Rapidus, is now targeting 2nm in partnership with IBM using government subsides, initially prototyping and then full- scale manufacturing. Europe's program is aimed at producing chips for EU, security of supply for EU and monitoring and crisis response, with pilot lines to 2nm and 26 design centers. The primary beneficiaries are ST Micro, Infineon, Intel, TSMC and Wolfspeed. South Korea is taking a different approach\; increased tax breaks from 8 to 15% to the semiconductor industry. As a result, Samsung will set up six new wafer fabs and Hynix four. Under Hon. PM Modi's visionary leadership, along with two dedicated Hon Ministers, Rajeev Chandrasekhar and Ashwini Vaishnav, India's progress is most impressive of all, in my opinion. Looking back, India's strength has been in IC design and software. With the ISM investment of $10B, India already announced four manufacturing plants:; $2.7 B memory packaging plant by Micron, $3B plant by Tata’s TSAT,$1B by CG Power, and the first semiconductor plant by Tata at $ 11B. Gandhinagar is becoming Silicon Valley for manufacturing The GOI was well on its way to announce, before elections, about $2B for ISRC for R D with industry-centric research at many top IITs, IISc that I have been leading, and technology development and pilot lines at SCL in Chandigarh. This means India will have a sustainable path with all four phases of product cycle from system design to. large scale, global level research in partnership with 50-100 global companies, to technology development and pilot lines, and to manufacturing. With this scenario, India is well poised to be a global hub for design, software , R&D and manufacturing, making India a high-tech Nation, attracting many global companies for R&D and manufacturing, educating massive number of students and creating jobs for them in India. I see this as truly amazing!

India's quest for semiconductor self-reliance gets wings in 2024. Here's what to expect in 2025 ((By Naandika Tripathi Forbes India Staff)) ******************************************************************************** Central and state government policies and incentives have encouraged the setting up of semiconductor fab facilities, but global challenges could cause uncertainties. As the US and China compete to produce the world's most advanced chips, India has made a promising start by initiating construction of its semiconductor fabrication and packaging units. While India has taken the first steps, it needs to establish itself among the advanced players. Experts point out that as globalisation faces increasing pressures, geopolitics will play a crucial role in shaping trade and technology flows, making it essential for India to navigate these complexities effectively. In 2024, several proposals were approved under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), with Gujarat attracting the most facilities. Tata Electronics is setting up a semiconductor fab facility in Dholera, investing Rs 91,526 crore to manufacture 28 nm chips. The company is also establishing an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Assam, with an outlay of Rs 27,120 crore. Other investments include CG Power's OSAT facility in Sanand, Gujarat (Rs 7,584 crore) and Kaynes Technology's OSAT facility in the same area (Rs 3,307 crore). All five semiconductor units will receive subsidies from central and state governments. The Gujarat government launched the 'Gujarat Semiconductor Policy 2022-2027,' providing significant support to the sector. This policy complements the central government's financial assistance with an additional 40 percent subsidy for capital expenditure. Uttar Pradesh has also introduced the 'Uttar Pradesh Semiconductor Policy 2024' to foster a conducive environment for the industry. According to Manish Gurwani, mission director of Gujarat State Electronics Mission, Micron's mini pioneer site is already operational, and construction on its greenfield project is expected to become operational by mid-2026. Meanwhile, Tata Electronics' project is expected to be completed by Q2 2027, and CG Semis' project by mid-2027. Kaynes Semicon's project construction work is expected to commence soon. “The Gujarat government is proactively engaging with numerous suppliers and ecosystem partners associated with Tata Electronics, Micron, CG Semicon, and Kaynes Semicon to encourage the establishment of their units or offices within the state. In addition, efforts are ongoing to integrate local companies and international semiconductor firms into these supply chains,” Gurwani tells Forbes India.

These countries are better shielded from supply chain disruptions and have greater control over their digital destinies, thus ensuring digital sovereignty, critical infrastructure security, and defense system integrity. Presently, India ranks as the second-largest importer of semiconductor chips globally. Recent data presented in Rajya Sabha shows a staggering 92% surge in India’s chip imports over the last three years. Projections suggest India’s semiconductor consumption could surpass $80 billion by 2026 and $110 billion by 2030, underscoring the urgency of balancing trade deficits. While oil remains a significant import, semiconductors are equally crucial, and local production could stabilise the trade balance.
