“The Literature of Prescription: Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “The Yellow Wall-Paper” is a six-banner traveling exhibition now on display at the Newport Beach Public Library in Newport, CA through mid November. These six banners tell the story of how Gilman’s short story served as an indictment of the medical profession and the social conventions restricting women's professional and creative opportunities. This was at a time when women were challenging traditional ideas about gender that excluded them from political and intellectual life, medical and scientific experts drew on notions of female weakness to justify inequality between the sexes. #NLMTravelingExhibit #NewportBeachPublicLibrary #LibraryDisplay #TheYellowWallPaper #GenderInequality #CharlottePerkinsGilman

Sometimes, providers tell me they hesitate to correct misinformation on gender-affirming care, feeling like it won’t make a difference. And yet, isn’t that true of so much in medicine? Patients may not always agree right away, but giving them the facts is a part of our responsibility. What we say can plant a seed—even if it takes time to grow. I've heard countless patients reference something their doctor told them, even when it wasn’t what they initially wanted to hear. That’s the power of providing accurate information. Want to explore why sharing the facts on gender care is so vital? Check out this week’s episode of Gender Matters: Insights from a Physician to hear more on why correcting misinformation isn’t political—it’s essential.

Building workplaces rooted in respect for diversity has never been easy. Like all forms of structural oppression, the narrative opposing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging has changed shape over the years. No matter the tremendous societal and business benefit DEI brings to organizations, this threat is ever present. As a queer Black woman in an executive DEI role, I take issue with many of the points being made in this commencement address. The speaker uses his platform to spew bigotry and intolerance by invalidating the humanity of LGBTQIA+ people. He goes further to attempt to groom the next generation of workers sowing the very seeds that enable these divisive thoughts to enter into the workplace. Moreover, his dystopian view of women aligns their value merely to motherhood and serving their husbands. He is the voice of far too many. His voice is organized and a direct contributor to organizations backing away from their DEI commitments. The fear ideas like these generate are ringing more loudly than concrete data that shows overwhelmingly how DEI efforts have proven to impact business for the better. A lie told often and loudly enough becomes the truth. Regardless of role, we each can play a part in disrupting the lie that DEI is some scourge on society. We each hold the power to spread more respect and tolerance for those in our midst. Hate is too heavy a burden for any one of us to carry. The future of humanity depends upon each of us doing our part to be a welcoming and supportive neighbor to those around us. May we all work a little harder each day to build a society undergirded by the philosophy that we ought to do no harm with our words and deeds.

From Human Resources Management Review: Bias and discrimination in organizations remain persistent challenges despite significant efforts and investments to address them. We systematically reviewed all experimental papers (N = 116, k = 159) between 2000 and 2022 on interventions addressing bias and discrimination in organizations due to age, disability, ethnicity, and sexuality. We find that interventions involving structuring communication documents, procedures, or interactions are effective for addressing bias and discrimination against disabled, ethnic, and sexual minorities. Interventions that build similarities between minorities and majorities are effective for age and disabled minorities. Interventions that provide additional information about minorities or raise awareness about biases are effective for age minorities. Exposure interventions that create experiences interacting with minorities and their realities are effective for age, ethnic, and sexual minorities. Based on our findings, we develop a conceptual framework and present a future research agenda that revolves around the effectiveness of interventions. #HumanResources #PeopleAndCulture #Bias #Discrimination https://lnkd.in/gXHV3wZm

Flip Your Ballot! Proposal 1: The Equal Rights Amendment in New York State When you vote tomorrow, don’t forget to flip your ballot and make your voice heard on Proposal 1, the Equal Rights Amendment, which could reshape New York’s Constitution to protect essential rights and uphold principles central to bioethics, including autonomy, equity, and justice. This amendment would expand protections against discrimination based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, and reproductive healthcare. It is a powerful step toward ensuring that everyone in New York has the right to make personal, autonomous decisions, particularly regarding their health and well-being, without fear of discrimination. In bioethics, we emphasize respect for individuals’ autonomy and strive for equitable systems where all voices are heard and respected. A “YES” vote for Proposal 1 aligns with these values, empowering people to live free from bias and supporting laws that work to undo past injustices. Voting on Proposal 1: A “YES” vote embeds these protections into the New York State Constitution. A “NO” vote leaves these protections out. Let’s make sure New York remains a leader in protecting individual rights and advancing equitable healthcare access. Flip the ballot, vote “YES,” and let’s protect the autonomy and dignity of all New Yorkers. #NYVotes #EqualRights #Bioethics #Autonomy #HealthcareJustice #NYC #Proposal1 #NewYorkState

Every man should read about Kevin Ibbs, Australia's most famous revoked consent case, post the Bruce Lehmann/Britney Higgins saga. If you aren't aware, Kevin Ibbs was "a Perth man who became known as the “30 Second Rapist” because he was convicted of sexual assault after continuing for 30 seconds after his partner revoked consent. "In fact, the whole thing was a set-up, with Ibb’s wife arranging for her best friend to have sex with him and then revoking consent – to get him charged with rape and sent to prison, so that she could get hold of the marital home. "It worked a treat – Ibbs did end up in jail. Eventually his conviction was quashed, he was acquitted and the two women were briefly imprisoned. "However, by then Ibbs had lost his reputation, his business, all his assets and, eventually, his life – he committed suicide some years later. "So how did the woman in this case revoke consent? By announcing very late in the proceedings that it was “not right” because Ibbs’ wife was her best friend. Get a load of this – Ibbs had already stopped once, to get the complainant to confirm with his wife that she was OK with the sexual encounter. "It was, so they got back into it and then the accuser waited until he was highly aroused before complaining it was not right. In no way was this a clear statement that she was withdrawing consent. "Yet the judges fluffed around with all sorts of pronouncements about the “reasonableness” of the 30 seconds he continued in the saddle, arguing about whether Ibbs response should have been “nearly instantaneous.” "With affirmative consent laws only recently put in place and sexual consent courses teaching girls that they have the right to withdraw consent at any time, we can expect to see many more such cases. "It’s abundantly clear that this entire system is designed simply to nail men – which means there are very different rules for women and men." Maybe it's a good thing. Maybe we'll be more discerning about our partners, treating sex as the baby-making act it is, rather than the casual activity our Western society takes for granted. Maybe this will decrease the thousands of abortions committed for convenience's sake, arising out of casual encounters that resulted in pregnancy Folks, this is the male birth control pill you've been looking for.
