For me, this time of year feels extra intense because my birthday falls between Xmas and New Year’s. It’s like, could this time of year _be_ any more emotional and reflective? 😅 There’s this swirling mix of expectations, pressure, wishes, and desires in the air that’s hard to ignore. Can anyone else relate? The older I get, the more I want to take time to just _be_ at the end of December. No matter what you do this holiday season, I hope you to take some time to self-reflect—especially to revisit every win you can remember from the past year. We’re not really encouraged to celebrate our wins, but it’s incredibly powerful. It helps you see how far you’ve come. We easily forget about those big wins and milestones as soon as they're over and become part of our "new normal." But not that long ago, they might have felt super overwhelming, or even impossible. So, take a moment and jot down those wins. You’ve done amazing things—and that’s worth celebrating. Apparently ‘tis’ the season to be jolly 🤶🏻 But if you’re struggling to see the wood for the trees, or the presents for the wrapping, here are some tips ✨ 🎄 Feeling overwhelmed with an endless list still to get through ➡️ chunk each task down by halving it, then halving it again, and again, and again, until you have a bitesize task that feels ‘doable’. Bitesize 🟰 8 presents still to wrap? Halve it to 4, then to 2, then to 1. And then wrap 1 present, it’ll feel much more doable than 8 and you’ll have made a start ✨ 🎄Negative narratives running through your busy brain ⬇️ Reframe 🟰 instead of ‘I’ll never write all these Christmas cards’ try ‘I love sending cards to those I don’t see over Christmas’ ✨ (oh, and say the reframe out loud) 🎄Not finding much joy in the festive season Gratitude 🟰 find gratitude in the simplest of things, it’s always there if you look for it. ‘I’m grateful for the lovely chat at the supermarket checkout today’ or ‘I love for the dry weather so I can get outside’ ✨ Interested to hear more? WHAT ARE YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES? I recently finished watching the third season of The Bear (on HULU). It’s probably more accurate to say that I gorged it down like a contestant in a hot-dog eating contest. I love this show on so many levels. It's about an up-and-coming young chef who returns to Chicago to take over a family restaurant. The show is intense and can be downright uncomfortable to watch at times. It’s not a show everyone will enjoy. That said, what I’m about to discuss is spoiler-free. But do give the show a try if you haven't already. The person I find the most intriguing in The Bear is the lead character, Carmy Berzatto (played by Jeremy Allen White). Carmy is a tortured soul with a relentless drive for excellence to the point of obsession and toxicity. In the first episode of Season 3, he sits down to write a list of “non-negotiables” for operating his restaurant. Ultimately, he lists 27 items ranging from the ridiculous “change menu every day” to the mundane “break down boxes.” Many of them are vague, while others are not logical. This got me thinking about my own non-negotiables. What are they? What should they be? After watching that episode, I did a little reflection. I began by writing down all 27 of Carmy’s non-negotiables by hand in a notebook. Many of them resonated with me (including breaking down boxes 📦). Here are nine of Carmy’s 27 non-negotiables that I would adopt as my own: 1. Constantly evolve through passion and creativity 2. No surprises 3. Know your sh*t! 4. Push boundaries 5. No excuses 6. Not about you 7. Details matter 8. Vibrant collaboration 9. Less is more With further reflection, I added these to represent my own business philosophy: 10. Show up every day (physically and mentally) 11. Decision-makers must be present to win 12. It’s about more than cosmetic design 13. Know when you’re tired - act accordingly. 14.
