While this article “suggests” numbering oil transfer containers to help track them down when one goes missing, I insist on it. Every designated oil transfer container in your plant should be assigned an “equipment ID” and entered as an asset into your oil analysis program. This establishes two very important monitoring tasks for your new oil supply: 1- the condition of the container, and its ability to deliver quality, non-contaminated new oil to machines by trending the moisture, particulate, additive and viscosity values of the new oil and identify proactively when contamination has taken place 2- updating baselines- when batches change from the new oil deliveries you receive, variations in viscosity and additive levels can be flagged and updated so that machine oil analysis is being compared to the actual, rather than “typical” values for viscosity per ISO grade or Technical Data Sheets. Updated additive levels will aid in RULER and elemental additive trending. When every container has a unique “equipment ID” you can also set proactive cleaning or end of service life schedules based on container aging. Modern oil transfer containers are plastic, use springs, and fatigue over time: they won’t last forever.

The small chemical tanker markets in both the Mediterranean and Northwest Europe started this week on a quiet note, with limited stems being quoted, putting pressure on shipowners. Following last week’s activity, many expected the momentum to persist, but this has not been the case. Freight rates remain under pressure as there are still prompt vessels available, both in the Mediterranean and Northwest Europe.    The lack of prompt cargoes continues to challenge shipowners, with most stems being quoted for early December laycans. Spot vessels are left with limited options, forcing owners to commit to these stems and absorb waiting times.   However, worsening weather conditions could further tighten vessel availability. These developments suggest that some upward pressure on rates may emerge in the coming days, offering a glimmer of hope for shipowners.   In any case, it is still the beginning of the week, and the market could evolve depending on how cargo volumes develop in the days ahead.
