"What's past, present & future of space science? & why should we invest in it? In this talk, Professor Anu Ojha OBE from UK Space Agency explores discoveries made through applications of space science, climate change,& engineering & how they have changed humanity's perspectives of our position in universe, & ask what difference space, science & technology have made to our everyday lives. Has it been worth all money spent when facing so many challenges here on Earth? What science was British astronaut Tim Peake doing on the International Space Station (ISS) during his six-month mission there from 2015 to 2016? And will Mars ever be a home for the human race?" Building a universe of talent! Located in the bustling Bellville area of Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) is making its mark in the global astronomy community. “We aim to produce well-rounded astronomers whose skills are applicable beyond astronomy,” says Ed Elson, Associate Professor of Astrophysics. Graduates often enter the private sector with strong skills in big data, analytics, and problem-solving, making them adaptable critical thinkers. UWC also emphasises academic and presentation skills, teaching students to conduct impactful research and write scientific papers. Astronomy, often seen as exclusive, should be accessible to anyone passionate about science, according to Elson. Interest in astronomy in South Africa has surged, fuelled by the MeerKAT radio telescope and the upcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project. MeerKAT, featuring 64 observational dishes, plays a crucial role in detecting and analysing cosmic radio waves, deepening our understanding of the universe. It also serves as a precursor to the SKA, set to be the world’s most powerful radio telescope by around 2028 or 2029. Emeritus Professor Ramesh Bharuthram notes that UWC’s space science research has evolved significantly; in 2008, the university had only one astronomer, but by 2015, it was recognised as having Africa’s third-strongest astronomy team, with six academics. 🚀 Grateful for the opportunity to participate in the "Humanities in Space" event! Thanks to the organizers, for bringing together diverse perspectives on this fascinating intersection and thanks to the speakers: Laetitia C. , Annick Castiaux, PhD Christina Stange-Fayos , Prof. Dr. Vincent Simoulin , Jens Temmen Prof Dr. Stefan Marschall. Exploring #space isn't just about the technicalities; it's also about understanding our place in the cosmos, grappling with ethical dilemmas, and exploring the human experience. The humanities play a crucial role alongside technical studies, shaping our understanding and guiding our exploration. Let's continue to bridge the gap between science and humanity for a richer, more holistic approach to space exploration! Honorable mentions for: the Representation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia to the European Union, UNIVERSEH European University, bees in space, space blogs, the lack of direct experience in space for most space researchers leading to abstract thinking and storytelling, paying the externalities now instead of leaving it to future generations, new interdisciplinary masters being prepared. #jointhespacecrew #HumanitiesInSpace #SpaceExploration #LeapIntoSpace 🌌

𝙃𝙪𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙏𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙚 𝙎𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙇𝙖𝙪𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙎𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚! I’m so excited about this milestone! This experiment is crucial for 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆. By studying the effects on 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵, 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, and the 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺, researchers aim to improve astronaut health during long-term space missions and uncover new medical insights for Earth. I find this breakthrough especially important as it merges the fields of space science and biomedical research, pushing the boundaries of what we know about human health in extreme environments. It also exemplifies how innovation and curiosity can lead to new ways of thinking about health and the 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 🚀 More about Alsaleh Lab research: https://lnkd.in/dfYjgVdF #SaturdayRepost #SpaceInnovation #BiomedicalResearch #HumanTissueResearch #Microgravity #SpaceScience #ResearchMilestone #AlsalehLab #SpaceHealth
