I've been delivering public engagement and science communication training for 6 and a half years now, and while a lot has changed in that time, the one thing that hasn't is the amount of questions I pose to my trainees. - Why do you do public engagement? - Who are you trying to engage with? - What are they getting out of it? - Why do you think a topic is sensitive or difficult? - How are you going to reach your audience? - Why have you used that image? People have come up to me at the end of a session to tell me they're leaving with more questions than answers - and neither they nor I think that's a bad thing! Public engagement and science communication are important, they're difficult to do well, and the answers to these questions will vary for each individual, area of work and project. We need to keep questioning our methods!

Have you ever thought about how effective communication can transform your life❓ I used to struggle with speaking in English, often feeling anxious about expressing my thoughts clearly. No matter how much technical knowledge I had, my communication skills seemed to hold me back. But things changed when I joined the communication training at Brocamp. Through consistent practice and feedback, I slowly began to gain confidence. While I’m not perfect, I’ve made significant improvements and continue to work on enhancing my communication skills. 💡 Why Effective Communication Matters: Even with strong technical knowledge, without proper communication skills, we risk being misunderstood, or worse, overlooked. Confidence - that's what we're all about when it comes to training. Sitting in front of a camera or posting to social media can be scary. Being asked to develop a comms plan or public speaking is even more so! We run courses all the time. When we train people we always try to - 👉 Say early on that any sort of media or communications work can be nerve-wracking. And that's ok to feel 👉 Make clear we aren't there to catch people out or feel like we are the cleverest person in the room (I bet you've been on courses where it seems the trainer just wants to feel important!) 👉 That, aside from practical advice, plan that our work is done if you come away from our training feeling more CONFIDENT! Day 3 of Placement Training: Building Confidence and Active Listening It’s only Day 3 of my placement training, and I can already feel the difference! Today, I focused on two key skills: 1. Public Speaking Confidence – With every opportunity to speak, my confidence in articulating ideas clearly has grown. Practice and feedback are helping me communicate more effectively in front of a group. 2. Active Listening – I’ve realized that listening attentively is just as important as speaking. It’s improving how I respond and engage in conversations, making communication more meaningful. Each day is a step toward becoming a more well-rounded professional.
