Our Beekeeping Education & Technical Coordinator, Hannah Neil, taught the team how to use NOD’s very own beeswax to make candles and fire-starters! We love to educate ourselves on great ways to keep busy in the winter and make the best of all our beeswax collected from this year. ❄️ 🐝 Thank you to Hannah for providing such a fun, educational activity! #beeeducation #healthybeeshealthyplanet #nodapiary #beekeeping

🏋️ A Busy Saturday in the Apiary 🐝 Today was a productive day! I spent the morning conducting hive inspections, replacing old wax frames with fresh foundations and organizing the apiary to keep everything running smoothly. Afterward, I used a bushcutter to clear the area around the hives, ensuring the site remains clean and accessible for both me and the bees. In the raining season in Brazil plants grow wild and keeping the apiary tidy isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about safety as well. One of my biggest fears in beekeeping is encountering a rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus) between the hive top and the roof, just last week I found one relaxing in a bed of leaves close by. A well maintained apiary minimizes these risks and keeps both the beekeeper and the bees safe. Another crucial reason for maintaining a clean apiary is to protect the bees from predators. Spiders often build their webs in the area in front of hives if nature is left unchecked. These webs can trap bees as they enter or leave the hive, disrupting their foraging patterns and endangering their safety. By keeping the area around the hives clean we create open flight paths that allow the bees to come and go without obstacles or treats. #bees #beekeeping #apiarymanagement

Wondering why pigs? Watch this video from Heal Rewilding about how they'll make a difference to the landscape!
Meet Ticket and Tailor, our new Tamworth pig ecosystem engineers! 🐖 🐖 These adorable mud lovers came to Heal Somerset as little piglets just before Christmas but we've kept their arrival quiet for a few weeks while they settled in. The whole team is already completely smitten. They are brothers and never leave each other's side, spending their days rootling around getting their snouts muddy and enthusiastically squealing at anyone who walks by in the hope of food. They're currently in a two-acre electric-fenced area with a bijou pig residence hand-built by one of our trustees, so they have shelter while the weather is cold and we can keep a close eye on them while they’re still young. Eventually, they’ll live a wild life, roaming hundreds of acres using natural shelter and without any supplementary feeding unless we have to. You can find out more about Ticket and Tailor, and the role pigs play in rewilding, on our new pigs webpage 👇 https://lnkd.in/eEbY22ni Big thanks to our wonderful business partner Ticket Tailor | Proud B Corp™ for funding the pig project. Thanks also to Tom Francome at Planet House Productions for capturing the day they arrived at Heal Somerset so beautifully. #Rewilding #EcosystemEngineer #HealSomerset #NatureRecovery #WildlifeRecovery

No single honeybee can live on its own for very long. While the collective hive could live forever, the individual bees are mortal, and they depend on each other to survive. https://bit.ly/3V7w1cI #foxhoundbeeco #beekeeping #beekeepingtips

Two years after acquiring Heal Somerset, it’s time to scale up nature recovery so we are thrilled to welcome the newest members of the Heal Rewilding team, our ecosystem engineers, Ticket and Tailor*. The Tamworth brothers have joined Heal to deliver their in-depth rootling expertise to the 460-acre site. Passionate about creating vibrant new habitats and enabling biodiversity to expand, just a few weeks into thier new field-based career, they have brought their authentic selves to the organisation and are excited to be already applying Soil Nurturing Outdoor Ultimate Teamwork (SNOUT)-based methodology in their mission to disrupt the legacy industrial dairy grass mat monopoly from the ground up. The porcine pair’s ancestors have `previous` in this respect. Wild boar have traditionally played a key role, through finding food, in establishing and maintaining woodland pasture and its thriving plant and animal ecosystems. Wild boar are currently classed as dangerous animals in the UK, so Ticket and Tailor are acting as piggy proxies in thier place. If you live in, or are just visiting, the Somerset/Wiltshire borders, you are welcome to visit Heal and walk across the land to experience the rewilding already in action on the site. Or visit healrewiding.org.uk to find out how you or your organisation can get involved. * In case you are wondering, Ticket and Tailor are named after one of our business partners Ticket Tailor | Proud B Corp™ who have funding the project. Thanks also to Tom Francome at planet house productions for capturing the excitement of the day they arrived at Heal Somerset. #rewilding #wilding #ecosystems #somerset #wiltshire #naturerecovery #goodnews #wildliferecovery #newhires #ecosystemengineers

Bees learn behaviors through a process called social learning, which involves observing and mimicking the actions of other bees. This form of learning is crucial for the efficient functioning and survival of the colony. #foxhoundbeeco #beekeeping #learningbehavior
