A couple of years ago I penned this little diagram to try and articulate what systemic areas in social care we needed to develop innovations for in order to help resolve our challenges. I don't think for a second I nailed it, and a now it could do with a refresh, but some of the generic types of innovation (on the right of the diagram, in orange), when applied to those areas on the left-side (in blue) could still help shift that dial towards a more sustainable and effective system. Some time ago my dear colleague Benedict Odjobo and I recorded this conversation on how we can find harmony in the digital age. I am still grateful for this invite, as first being asked is a great feeling and an opportunity to fathom the red thread in one's story-of-yourself-collection. It strikes me always to realize how much we build our lives around technological achievements, regardless of how much we love to label them customer-centred, UX-optimised and else. It is like Sherry Turkle once said in her great book Alone Together, first we let the machines work for us, till we reach a point where we work for and live in the machine. That's why I support the crucial discourse on tech dev and the clearer notion, that neither digitalisation nor AI is an autonomous entity, but always man-made, even though the public narratives evoke different impressions. As it overspans the planet, its implications affect this as a system and we either all win with these achievements, or we do not. Being far from a luddite, I just always wonder, why every optimisation leads humans to accelerate the rat race, instead of dwelling in the fulfilment of earlier promises, future tech will make our lives easier – which is in short term and narrow perspective even true, I love using my new little helpers, yet on the other hand there is no much of a choice, when you wanna keep up with the pace in your environment. And in almost 20 years of working, I never saw any improvement in efficiency and efficacy that made any business leader I worked with say: Oh that's great, now we can slow down ;) After spending some valuable time in African countries I am even more curious in what different ways this development will unfold the balance of tech and societies in the future?!
