🎉 I am delighted to announce that my companion papers have been published in the journal Nuclear Fusion and are now available to read online: 📄 Erosion enhancement by impurity entrainment in the highly collisional plasmas of Magnum-PSI 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ei-RmRnG 📄 High erosion and re-deposition rates of tungsten in the highly collisional plasmas of Magnum-PSI 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eKDwcDeW 🔬 These studies explore the role of impurity entrainment in the power exhaust of fusion devices. Impurity entrainment—dragging impurities through the plasma flow—will play an important role in the erosion and re-deposition of the plasma-facing materials in future fusion reactors. 🙏 I am very grateful to my co-authors for their contributions. Special thanks to my supervisors Thomas Morgan and Job Beckers for their guidance on this research at DIFFER. #NuclearFusion #DIFFER #PlasmaPhysics #Research #Innovation #Sustainability

The Very Long Lifetime of 14C in the Shell Mode | Article by Igal Talmi https://lnkd.in/gPqUEPkX Weizmann Institute of Science; MDPI #shellmodel #14C #betadecay #physics This article belongs to the Special Issue: The Nuclear Shell Model 70 Years after Its Advent: Achievements and Prospects https://lnkd.in/dAtgbDyi #Abstract This is a fitting memory for our late friend and colleague Aldo Covello. For many years, he was our host in the series of Spring Seminars which he organized. In these conferences, the shell model was a central subject which was taken very seriously. This paper is written after 70 years of successful shell model calculations of nuclear energies and also various transitions. The beta decay of 14 C has been an enigma. The history and present situation are described. The importance check of any theory to yield the strength of the mirror transition of 14O is pointed out.

On #InternationalDayofPeace, we're hopping back in time to 1958 when this twisty fusion device 🥨 known as a stellarator was exhibited at the ⚛️ Atoms for Peace conference. Sponsored by the United Nations, the conference was the largest international gathering ever to focus on the potential of taming nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The stellarator — pioneered at the Lab — was the first to produce a spiraling, or helical, magnetic field. 🧲 In fusion reactions, magnetic fields hold the plasma that fuels fusion reactions together so that the reactions can take place. Magnetic fusion research began at Princeton in 1951 under the code name Project Matterhorn. As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory, managed by Princeton University, today we are tackling the world's toughest science and technology challenges with plasma, the fourth state of matter. We're excited to share a recent publication involving two of our scientists, Sridhar Ramamurthy and Jeffrey D. Henderson, in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry at Western University (Jian Chen, Dmitrij Zagidulin, James Noel, and David Shoesmith), and three international organizations focused on long-term used nuclear fuel storage: Nuclear Waste Management Organization (Mehran Behazin, Ph.D., Pete Keech), Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (Christina Lilja, Erik Bergendal), and Nagra - Nationale Genossenschaft für die Lagerung radioaktiver Abfälle (Nikitas Diomidis). This publication delves into the impact of trace amounts of oxygen and sulfur on copper corrosion. The findings indicate that oxy-sulfur species, rather than just sulfide, are necessary to trigger intergranular corrosion in copper. Here a variety of techniques have been employed, including electrochemical measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).
