💡More from the Week of Innovative Regions in Europe 2024: How do geopolitical, climate and technological dynamics affect Europe’s development at the regional level? This is one of the key questions being asked during discussions at #WIRE2024. Answers include: ➡️creating #synergies between different sectors of the economy capitalising on #digitalisation to help streamline decision-making ➡️strengthening public services in disadvantaged regions to attract #investment and drive #innovation. Experience also shows that smaller, region-based institutions can play a vital role, stresses Silvia Gómez Recio, Secretary General of the YERUN - Young European Research Universities, whose 23 members are bringing added value to their local economies by focusing on sustainable development and the #GreenTransition; developing community-based #partnerships; and collaborating with other sectors on pioneering #research. More broadly, innovation deficiencies continue to hamper Europe’s ability to keep pace globally. Panellist Joanna Kubiak, of the Wielkopolska Region Brussels Office, says her area in Poland is an “emerging innovator” yet lags behind in Horizon Europe research and innovation involvement: “There is still an innovation divide and that is one of the big challenges when it comes to R&I in Europe.” She stresses that more needs to be done “on the EU side but also on the local and national side” to strengthen EU-wide innovation. Our partner, Community Enterprise Association Ireland, has shared some fantastic updates about their involvement in the #HorizonEurope Project, #RInnoValleys. Over the past 8 months, they've built strong relationships, visited innovation-driven cities and regions, and learned a great deal about the #EuropeanInnovationCouncil and the #NewEuropeanInnovationAgenda. They have also forged great friendships across Belgium, Hungary, Greece, Spain, and Malta 🌍. We're excited to hear about the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment's announcement, with Minister Peter Burke welcoming the designation of all three of Ireland’s NUTS 2 regions as #RegionalInnovationValleys under the European Commission's #NewEuropeanInnovationAgenda. This initiative aims to strengthen regional innovation ecosystems, bridge the innovation gap in Europe, and enhance overall innovation performance. For Ireland, this recognition means significant potential as hubs of innovation and economic growth within a network of 151 similarly designated regions across Europe. Community Enterprise Association Ireland, as part of the RInnoValleys Project, is focused on bridging gaps between Innovation Led Regions [Belgium], Strong Innovator Regions [Ireland], and less well-performing regions across Europe [Malta, Hungary, Spain, Greece]. They are dedicated to identifying collaboration opportunities for their community and supporting the innovation ecosystem at both national and regional levels through the #enterprisecentre and #innovationhub network, which has been funded by Enterprise Ireland and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment since the 1990s. We are thrilled to be working alongside such a dedicated partner and look forward to the continued progress and success of the RInnoValleys Project. RInnoValleys is a #HorizonEurope Project which Community Enterprise Association Ireland is fortunate to be part of. Over the last 8 months, since our partners first began to meet, we have built relationships, visited cities and regions where the commitment to innovation growth is at the core of what the ecosystem builders do, learnt much about the #EuropeanInnovationCouncil and the #NewEuropeanInnovationAgenda ... and very importantly we have made great friends in business across five different EU regions including Belgium, Hungary, Greece, Spain and Malta 🌍. On foot of our own experiences we were delighted to hear of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment's announcement with Peter Burke, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment welcoming the designation of all three of Ireland’s NUTS 2 regions as #RegionalInnovationValleys under the European Commission #NewEuropeanInnovationAgenda. Regional Innovation Valleys aim to strengthen regional innovation ecosystems, bridge the innovation gap in Europe and improve Europe's overall innovation performance. For Ireland, this means that each of the three NUTS 2 regions are now formally recognised as having real potential as hubs of innovation and economic growth within a network of 151 similarly designated regions across Europe. As a member of the RInnoValleys Project which is focused on bridging gaps between Innovation Led Regions [Belgium], Strong Innovator Regions [Ireland] and less well performing regions across Europe [Malta, Hungary, Spain, Greece] Community Enterprise Association Ireland is focused on identifying collaboration opportunities for our community and supporting the innovation ecosystem at national and regional level though the #enterprisecentre and #innovationhub network which has been funded by Enterprise Ireland and Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment since the 1990s. Despite little change among leading and lagging countries in the latest European Innovation Scoreboard, Cyprus has made a remarkable leap from 15th place in 2017 to 10th in 2024, maintaining its 'strong innovator' status for the third consecutive year. What it takes? - 𝟯𝟵% 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 from 2017 to 2023, outpacing the EU average. - Transformation from a place with no universities into a research hub that is now home to 𝟭𝟮 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 and 𝟯,𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀. - The island is on track to receive €𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 from 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲. - 𝟯,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗠𝗘𝘀 supported by a growing network of innovation hubs and venture capital. - Government initiatives such as the 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮 and a new €𝟮𝟳.𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 equity fund to attract international talent and support start-ups. Efforts to boost innovation in Europe’s Widening countries are clearly paying off, with 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 out of 15 nations seeing year-on-year 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀. Traditionally funded by the government and programs like Horizon, Cyprus faces challenges in spin-out policies and IP rights but is clearly on the path to becoming a leading innovation hub.
