All good things come to an end….but sometimes only temporarily! 😀Yesterday, the team around the cooperative research project PREMI concluded its work with a final meeting at the SAL headquarters in Graz. Over the past 2.5 years, our colleagues in the Research Unit Coexistence & Electromagnetic Compatibility (CEMC) have been working with partners from Technische Universität Graz, MAGNA Powertrain GmbH & Co KG and Tridonic on the development of novel and optimized methods for modeling and simulation of electromagnetic interference (#EMI) of Electronic and Software Based Systems (ESBS). ⚡ Until now, physical prototypes are required to prequalify electromagnetic interference of ESBS. Although it is state-of-the-art to design specific circuit blocks based on simulation, there is no holistic approach to predict EMI of complete systems. 🔌 That was the impetus for this project. As a result, the team developed future-proof workflows for EMI simulation of Power Electronic components and systems. 👉 But the journey isn't over yet - we will continue our work in the follow-up project PREMI 2. Companies are still welcome to join: https://lnkd.in/dq6Eiwdv #electromagneticinterference #esbs #futuretechnologies

As I travel around the world and visit engineering and design teams at different car producers and automotive component suppliers, I see two main differences in the way engineering teams are designing and developing their products. The players that are winning market share are bringing great products to market much faster and are doing something fundamentally different; 1. They leverage their suppliers much earlier and deeper in the design process by encouraging them to bring state of the art technology to the table to help reduce cost, and improve productivity and product functionality. 2. When they face technical challenges in design, they engage with their suppliers in a much more collaborative manner. They share the details of the challenges openly and encourage suppliers to find solutions with them rather than being guarded and providing only the minimum required information. It's for this reason that we have made significant investments in how we approach and collaborate with product designers. With our newly developed digital twin and visual material card capabilities, we can provide designers with the tools they need to solve the most complex problems using smart chemistry. Join us for a webinar hosted by Charged on October 30th, at 11 am US EDT, as Keon Woo Lee, PhD, eMBA and Zamaan Sadeghi delve into the crucial role of simulation in advancing materials for EV battery systems. Discover how Henkel utilizes advanced modeling to enhance safety, sustainability, and performance in innovative battery designs. After two years of intense work, the 𝗠𝗢𝗗𝗔𝗟𝗧 project has finished and successfully achieved its goals. It has been an incredible journey of development and collaboration like PI, and I couldn't be more proud of the results we've accomplished. The aim was ambitious, and today, we can say we've delivered a 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝘆 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. At CMT–Clean Mobility & Thermofluids (UPV), we completed an extensive 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗠𝗖𝟴𝟭𝟭 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 under various operating conditions—examining their thermo-electrical behavior and studying how they respond to thermal abuse and thermal runaway scenarios. We also focused on understanding cell degradation due to cycle aging. These experimental insights allowed us 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀, 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝟭𝗗 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟯𝗗 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁o assess the module’s performance. The 1D approach enabled fast evaluations of the module’s thermal and electrical behavior, while the 3D modeling provided deeper insights into complex phenomena like thermal propagation, gas venting, and combustion. I want to express my sincere thanks to our fantastic partners—Zeleros, AIMPLAS · Instituto Tecnológico del Plástico, and 𝗭𝗶𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀—for their collaboration. Additionally, a huge thanks to the CMT–Clean Mobility & Thermofluids (UPV), especially Carlos Micó, Imad Elkourchi, Javier Marco and Antonio Gil whose dedication and hard work were essential in achieving these results. This project was co-funded by the 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗙𝗘𝗗𝗘𝗥 and the 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗼 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗱 𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗖𝗘. #innovation #batterytechnology #electricmobility #collaboration #MODALT #RetoIvaceInnova

The high thermal and pressure loads in the event of thermal runaway place very high demands on the selection of materials for the structure of battery housings. The upcoming Joint Partner Project “Thermal Propagation in BEV Battery Casings” deals specifically with the question of how the loads that actually occur in the event of thermal runaway can be predicted more accurately and how cell and casing behaviour can be further improved. Our aim is to predict in the early development phases how battery casings will behave and whether the safety requirements are met. This should save time and costs by reducing test campaigns and enable a better evaluation of material concepts. One of the already confirmed partners is Audi AG. Dr. Florian Meyer, Head of Development in CAE simulation for bodyshells, comments: “We have participated in four of AZL´s Joint Partner Project related to designing of plastic battery casings and developing application-oriented testing methods. We made valuable contacts for our supply chain and enriched our understanding on potentials of various material options. From the new starting projects, we expect valuable contributions to our advanced CAE-methods on the design of battery casings.” What you will get: 👉 Comprehensive analysis of the time sequence, the loads, the influence of cell characteristics and suitable models relating to thermal runaway 👉 Developed and evaluated methods of analysis that enable the prediction of loads for integration into CAE analyses for component development 👉 Guidelines for the application of the method Want to join the project consortium alongside AUDI AG and Syensqo? Or want to learn more about the project scope and what to expect? Reach out to Philipp Fröhlig and Warden Schijve. #automotive #battery #electricvehicles #composites #technology #innovation
