The ejection seat airline SATA Azores Airlines has once again made the news: The last privatization round has been cancelled, they simply got two offers that felt too low. So what do they do? Quite simply: the fictitious company value is inflated from €6M to €20M, something similar to the Portuguese real estate market. To top it all off, the current CEO resigns after just one year. Understandable, because for me the Portuguese aviation companies (they have 3 state-owned airlines and Lisbon as the worst airport in Europe) are a real laughing stock. Now this is getting interesting: International Airlines Group (IAG) has pulled out of its long-running (since 2019) attempt to buy Spanish airline Air Europa, apparently because it was unhappy with the level of slot remedies being demanded by the European Commission. But in the three-dimensional chess game that is European airline consolidation, this raises two questions: - is part of IAG’s reason for pulling out of the Air Europa deal the prospect of buying a stake in TAP Air Portugal and the near-impossibility of getting takeover approval if it already controlled the lion’s share of South Atlantic traffic from nearby Madrid? - what now for Air Europa? The airline is subscale and was heavily loss-making even before COVID. If it can keep going until after the TAP sale, I could imagine a losing TAP bidder (either Air France-KLM or Lufthansa Group) investing in Air Europa as a “consolation prize” to gain its south Atlantic routes. 🍿🍿🍿

Another operator permit — another opportunity for growth! 👏 Our subsidiary, BBN Airlines Indonesia, an ACMI specialist offering charter flights and air freight services, has just received a Foreign Operator Permit (FOP) from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). IAG backs-off from Air Europa deal! Regulator approval was one of the main reasons behind IAG to walk away from acquiring Air Europa. How long time would an approval take and what kind of concessions had to be fulfilled by IAG? The end of the story is Air Europa will fly solo and IAG to pay €50m in break-off fee. But, IAG to remain with 20% ownership of Air Europa. Well, lets see if IAG radar has lock-on towards TAP Air Portugal instead? Or, if IAG looking for widebody aircrafts, there are currently options availible, that in my view not causing any regulatory issues/conserns. IAG has a strategy, capital and capability for M&A, lets see what the near future brings, as the final M&A flight in Europe has not taken-off!

COMAC continues to make strides in the Chinese aviation market, consistently delivering its aircraft to local operators even as it faces challenges in securing Western certifications. With around 167 aircraft delivered so far—including 151 of the 90-seat #C909 and 16 of the 168-seat #C919 — COMAC has an impressive order backlog of 950 units. Here we go… 🎲   🚢 Carnival Cruise Line has announced an order for a brand new class of ships to join the Fun Ship Fleet, with three new vessels confirmed with a size of nearly 230,000 gross tons. 🤝The agreement has been signed with Italian shipbuilder FINCANTIERI and the new ships are scheduled for likely delivery in 2029, 2031, and 2033. 💰 In a deal rumoured to be worth a massive $5 billion this would break the drought on large cruise ship orders that has been in place since the pandemic struck in 2020. 😮 It is a record-breaking order both in the size of the cruise ships, the largest yet built in Italy, and the highest dollar-value contract reiterating leadership in the cruise industry. 📰 Boatbuilding News #boatbuildingnews #cruise #fincantieri #carnivalcruiseline

CAA extends MYAirline's AOC suspension amid investor talks The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has suspended the air operator's certificate (AOC) attached to MYAirline (MYM, Kuala Lumpur Subang) for a further three months amid reports officials from Malaysia's transport ministry have met with potential investors. CAAM has extended the suspension to April 14, 2024, and told local outlets that any relaunch would be contingent on multiple conditions, including having a minimum of two aircraft. MYAirline's leased A320-200s have all been taken off the Malaysian aircraft register. Four have been placed at other airlines and four put onto the Cayman register while stored or undergoing maintenance. The ACCC has just published its Domestic Airline Competition in Australia report for August. Despite falling airfares and generally improved reliability across 2024, the story is once again about an airline going into administration. Thankfully Rex will continue to operate its important regional services, but it appears that the domestic market has lost the competition it provided with Qantas Group and Virgin Australia on busier intercity routes. For most of 2024, about 50% of domestic passengers flew on routes with three or four competing airline groups. Following the Bonza and Rex developments, no domestic routes currently have more than two competing airline groups. ACMI airline and Avia Solutions Group subsidiary, AirExplore, has received approval from the US Department of Transportation (US DOT) to begin operations in the United States, allowing the airline to conduct commercial flights for passengers, cargo, and mail. ✅ The approval comes after the airline reapplied for its Foreign Air Carrier Permit following the acquisition of the airline by Avia Solutions Group. The approval for operation in the United States follows other recent permits for the airline, as well as AirExplore’s placement of four 737NG aircraft with Air Peace in Nigeria.
