On 29 November 2024, the EU and Japan began formal negotiations to cooperate within Horizon Europe, the union’s research, and innovation programme. Horizon Europe is the EU’s ambition to expand cooperation with like-minded non-EU countries that have a strong science, innovation, and technology profile. If the negotiations are successful, Japanese researchers will be able to lead and coordinate their own research and innovation projects under the programme, seek deeper collaboration with partners in the EU and others, and secure funding. https://lnkd.in/ejH_jVVN.

Why Poland's a Rising Star You Should Watch 🚀 (and Ringier Axel Springer Polska as well 😉) We recently had the opportunity to share insights on Poland's media environment with a group of talented fellows from the Axel Springer Academy of Journalism & Technology during their visit to Poland and RASP (Aleksandra Brzozowska Andrzej Lokaj thanks for the opportunity) Their enthusiasm for the country was truly inspiring, with some even expressing a desire to live and work here! This kind of positive feedback from future #mediaandtech leaders is a strong testament to Poland's growing attractiveness and to our RASP work culture ;) 🤩 And the good news doesn't stop there! Poland's economy is booming: ▶️ The Polish economy is on track for 2.8% growth in 2024, nearly triple the EU average! ▶️ This surge is driven by strong domestic consumption, fueled by rising wages and falling inflation. ▶️ Fresh EU funds are also contributing, despite ongoing judicial reforms. ▶️ The government is heavily investing in infrastructure projects like roads, railways, and ports, creating jobs and boosting activity. ️ ▶️ German exports to Poland are thriving, particularly in the automotive sector. 🇩🇪🇵🇱 ▶️ The new Ministry of Industry is driving a low-carbon future with investments in renewables and nuclear power. ♻️⚛️ ▶️ The strong Polish-German relationship is further strengthened by rapidly growing trade. In the eve of Polish Presidency in the EU in 2025, I'm incredibly proud of Poland's progress and excited for its bright future! The country is poised to become a leading force in the EU and a major player on the global stage. 🇵🇱 Thank you Kristin Schulze and Miriam Krekel for making this trip happen 🙏🏻 ▶️ More on Polish economy at Germany Trade & Invest: https://acesse.dev/XQByG ▶️ More on Polish economy in BILD: https://encr.pw/KxF0H #Poland #Economy #Growth #EU #Investment #TechTalent

How can Europe reduce its regional #innovation gap and strengthen its global #competitiveness? These were the central themes of the Week of Innovative Regions in Europe (#WIRE) conference, held in Budapest on 13-14 November under the Hungarian EU Presidency. With the EU's next Framework Programme (#FP10) on the horizon, experts and policymakers gathered to discuss how to increase #funding, streamline processes and foster regional cooperation. The event highlighted the critical need for smart investment in #education, skills and #research to bridge the gap between advanced and emerging regions and ensure that all areas can contribute to Europe's innovation potential. 📚 Read more about what was said during the conference: https://lnkd.in/ecunfCGi 📌 Sponsored by NRDIO - National Research Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH)

Earlier this week, around 80 passengers – high-level managers from businesses, research organisations and the public sector - got onboard the SINTEF and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) European Strategy Summit 2024 to discuss Norway’s contribution to a secure and green Europe. We took off by reflecting on the importance of the European Economic Area Agreement for both #Norway and the #EU, particularly when looking ahead and acknowledging the crucial strategic role Norway can/shall play in restoring Europe’s competitiveness in a rapid geopolitical changes. The flight got somehow turbulent when digging into the high-voltage European policy landscape, currently dominated by #Draghi’s report looking into the future of #EUcompetitiveness. Unless Europe applies immediate radical measures, such as boosting investment in #research and #innovation, (more than doubling the R&I programme’s budget to €200 billion over seven years!) Europe’s competitiveness, fundamental for Europe's strategic autonomy, will keep on lagging behind the US and China and will face “slow agony”. Norway, being an energy and mineral nation, has a unique opportunity to be part of the solution, and there are already political agreements such as the Norway-EU Green Alliance signed in April 2023 to establish further and closer cooperation. However, if this is to happen, Norway needs to act now too. Thank you to the speakers Virginie Battu-Henriksson, Vegard Grøslie Wennesland, Georg Emil Riekeles, Per Strand Sjaastad, the panellists Alexandra Bech Gjørv, Mathias Rauch from Fraunhofer, Even Aas, Abraham Foss, Olav Aamlid Syversen, Julie Wedege, Mari Sundli Tveit, Tor Grande, the moderators Stein Mortensholm, Nils Røkke, and all other participants to be part of this summit. Thank you also to SINTEF for trusting me and encouraging me to be the engine behind the scenes and lead the shaping of this exciting event, and to the teammates that have supported me all the way Johanne Solberg, Patrick Reurink, Torjus Kleiven Kandal. I end up with a picture of a satisfied project manager after the Summit :)

The future of European competitiveness is built on today’s investment in research and innovation. I welcome the clear messages of the Heitor Report. The Report recommends stimulating more industrial RD&I investment, underpinned by state-of-the-art Technology Infrastructures and many other important suggestions for the next months and years ahead. At the Prosperity directorate we do our best to make this happen.
🔬 How can we achieve a more impactful, streamlined & targeted EU #research & #innovation funding, harnessing Europe’s full potential and diverse talent pool? An independent group of 15 leading experts, chaired by Manuel Heitor, has presented to the Commission their recommendations to strengthen Horizon Europe, the EU research and innovation programme, and its successor. 🇪🇺 The European Union and 🇯🇵 Japan have officially begun negotiations for Japan’s association to Horizon Europe, the EU’s premier research and innovation programme. 🔬 If successful, this will mark 🇯🇵 Japan’s first participation in the EU’s most integrated form of research collaboration offered to non-EU countries. ✴️ Key Points of Cooperation: Japan's association to Horizon Europe would cover Pillar II, focusing on addressing societal challenges through multinational research projects. This partnership would enable Japanese researchers to lead and coordinate research projects, collaborate more extensively with EU and other associated country partners, and access EU funding on equal terms with EU participants. ✴️ Expanding Horizon Europe: The programme, with a €93.5 billion budget (2021–2027), already includes 19 associated countries. ✴️ Japan 🇯🇵 holds a vital position as a strategic partner for Europe, with bilateral research and innovation relations steadily advancing over the past two decades. Cooperation was formalized through an agreement that came into effect in 2011. This framework was further strengthened with a joint vision established in 2015 and a Letter of Intent signed in May 2020, aimed at fostering collaboration to address global challenges.
