One of the most influential theories of #InternationalRelations is that democracies do not go to war with one another. On the LSE United States Centre blog, Caleb Pomeroy and Brian Rathbun (University of Toronto - Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy) and Christopher Sebastian Parker (UC Santa Barbara) explore what drives this idea of the #DemocraticPeace in public opinion, finding that it is stems from the assumption that democracies are mostly white countries. They write that public support for the democratic peace is built on these implicit racial associations and white #Ethnocentrism.

Happy International Day of Democracy! I believe that Civil society is fundamental to a thriving democracy. Participatory democracy isn’t just a complement to representative democracy—it’s a core part of it.
