📢 New Open Access Research Highlight! 😊 We’re excited to share a recent open-access publication by Lorena Ortiz Cabrero (former MSA Assistant) and Aline Sierp (MSA Founding President) in the Italian Political Science Review. 🗒️ Their article, “Memory, post-fascism and the far-right”, offers critical insights into how contemporary Italian memory politics provide a lens for understanding far-right discourses across Europe. By comparing Italy’s Fratelli d'Italia with Spain’s VOX and Germany’s AfD, the authors reveal shared strategies that banalize fascism and shape polarized public discourse. 🔗 Read the full article for free here: https://bit.ly/401INeM #MemoryStudies #FarRight #Populism #PublicHistory #Research #NewPublication #OpenAccess

One of the most influential theories of #InternationalRelations is that democracies do not go to war with one another. On the LSE United States Centre blog, Caleb Pomeroy and Brian Rathbun (University of Toronto - Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy) and Christopher Sebastian Parker (UC Santa Barbara) explore what drives this idea of the #DemocraticPeace in public opinion, finding that it is stems from the assumption that democracies are mostly white countries. They write that public support for the democratic peace is built on these implicit racial associations and white #Ethnocentrism.

Happy International Day of Democracy! I believe that Civil society is fundamental to a thriving democracy. Participatory democracy isn’t just a complement to representative democracy—it’s a core part of it. In my manifesto, “Stand Up for Democracy / Speak Up for Europe”, I outline our responsibility at the European Economic and Social Committee to empower Civil Society voices across our Union. This commitment is crucial in shaping Europe’s democratic future and fostering trust in our institutions. In these challenging times, the EESC remains dedicated to being a platform for open, inclusive and meaningful democratic dialogue. Together, we can strengthen democracy in Europe, making it not only a guiding light for our citizens but also an inspiration for our neighbours and partners worldwide. As we move forward, I will consistently promote democracy, fundamental rights and the rule of law as guiding principles in all our activities. A shrinking space for civil society equates to a shrinking democracy—and we cannot let that happen. Let’s continue standing up for democracy, today and every day.
