In exactly one week we finally launch our Nordic Democracy Forum in Stockholm on November 20th-21st! ⏳🚀💥 At the Forum we will discuss both the challenges that the Nordic democracies face today and develop concrete efforts to diminish polarization, hate and extremism, as well as develop strategies for cross-sector and cross-Nordic cooperation. Over the course of 2 days Ministers, mayors, national and local leaders, representatives from universities, civil society, tech companies, foundations and youth groups will unite to set the direction and initiate shared action. We hope to capture the visions and ideas that will ensure we stay on the forefront in our prevention efforts to keep the Nordic Region a safe, secure, and inclusive place for all in the years to come. Key themes and discussions include: - How do we create and develop an inclusive democracy for all? - How do we support, empower, and integrate youth in building a strong and cohesive democratic society? - How do we combat cross-border youth crime? - How do we foster cross-sector initiatives that create safe neighbourhoods and avoid the deepening of segregation and the development of crime and recruitment to gangs? - How do we create safer digital communities given the challenges posed by disinformation and AI? We look very much forward to seeing all our participants there and are truly grateful to our contributors. #Democracyforum #NordicSafeCities #Safeguardingdemocracy #Safedigitalcity #Community #Cooperation #Engagement

Read the latest UNICEF Innocenti report which my friend and colleague Ece Tekbulut contributed to - a very timely and important report!
What research topic should UNICEF Innocenti focus on? We asked, and almost 400 children and young people responded: "Democracy". With this research agenda, we engaged a diverse group of children and young people, futurists, advocates and scholars to collect insights on democracy in the present and in the future. We also asked an AI program to generate a new vision for democracy to test how such technology can be used to foster creativity in governance. What we found is that children and young people care about democracy. We learned of initiatives and innovations around the world that aim to create a democracy that is more resilient and representative of the people. We also realized many were eager to see more intergenerational solidarity in strengthening democracy. Dive into the report to learn more about how we can build a democratic future for present and future generations! Exciting and hopeful news coming from the Nordics! Recent examples showcase how democracy can serve as a guiding force, fostering moderation in political decisions and actions. 🌟 🔮 Prediction 🌍: I predict that other countries around the world will take note and be inspired to embrace democratic principles and values even more, leading to a global shift towards moderation and cooperation in governance practices. This will ultimately pave the way for a more peaceful and stable world for generations to come. 🗣️ Commentary 🌱: It's truly heartening to witness the positive impact of democracy in action, especially during times of widespread polarization and extremism. The Nordics serve as a shining example of how moderation and inclusivity can lead to greater societal harmony and progress. 🌿 As we navigate through complex political landscapes worldwide, it's crucial to remember the importance of upholding democratic ideals and fostering compromise instead of confrontation. 🌍Külli Taro, Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance´s Head of Knowledge Transfer and Programme Director of Public Administration and Innovation: "Democracy is looking for a way forward everywhere in the world." 💬In a recent commentary on Vikerraadio, she finds that politics as a zero-sum game where one only has friends or enemies makes for a dangerous strategy, and restoring social cohesion becomes increasingly difficult. 👉Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dHb2EQ7E #TalTech Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance, TalTech #opinion #PublicAdministration #EstonianSociety #PoliticalStrategy #PublicInitiative

#ThrowbackThursday to the Alliance of Democracies Foundation Copenhagen Democracy Summit! This pivotal event brought together influential leaders from around the world to address the critical challenges facing democracies today. During the Summit, we explored the transformative role of technology in shaping political landscapes, developing innovative strategies to combat misinformation, and focusing on the empowerment of young leaders through democratic processes. These discussions are crucial as we navigate the complexities of the modern political environment and work towards more resilient and inclusive democratic systems. A standout moment was the launch of our #ThankYouDemocracy campaign. This initiative quickly gained momentum, thanks in part to influential democratic voices proudly wearing or holding our distinctive campaign t-shirts. Their support helped amplify our message, highlighting the importance of democracy and encouraging greater participation and engagement from people worldwide. The Summit was not just an event but a significant step forward in our collective efforts to safeguard and strengthen democratic values globally. Let's continue to support the role democracy plays in shaping a just and inclusive society. #ThankYouDemocracy #YouthInDemocracy #DemocracyMatters

It's hard to believe it's already been six months since the 2024 Global Democracy Coalition Forum, where stakeholders from five regional forums—Americas, Asia and the Pacific, Africa, Europe, and a global forum—came together to address pressing challenges and share valuable insights. They were inspiring and impactful gatherings! Common themes emerged across regions, such as the critical role of technology in civic engagement, the fight against disinformation, and the need for greater youth participation. Each forum highlighted the importance of inclusivity, transparency, and accountability. The 2024 Forum Report brings together these key insights and serves as a roadmap for us to continue advancing democratic governance. The lessons we learned—both the similarities and the unique regional differences—are ones we continue to build upon today. A big thank you to the four incredible organizations that led the region-specific forums: Red Latinoamericana y del Caribe para la Democracia (REDLAD), Yiaga Africa, Alliance for Vietnam's Democracy, and Political Watch. We look forward to continuing this journey and applying these insights to create a more inclusive, transparent, and resilient democracy. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eKJzVG5R

🇪🇺What is the socioeconomic burden of hate? We have not yet calculated the effects. However, we are convinced that ideologies based on inequalities severely impact our society, the economy, and individual well-being. The upcoming European election is about more than political affiliations; it’s about the society we want to build. It’s about standing for commonality, respect, and progress. At WifOR Institute, our 80 colleagues come from over 15 nations on four continents. Without them, our international research would not have achieved the value and quality it has today – and our organization would not be the cohesive community it has grown into. We know the value of diversity and inclusion and are committed to fostering it in other organizations and society. Let’s choose a path of unity, inclusivity, and progress. Let’s reject division and fear. Together, let’s build a better, stronger Europe for all. 🗳️Use your vote! Unsure who to vote for?
