#staffrepresentationmatters What would the world be without the United Nations? Next week I will be in Bonn attending the 3-day operationalizing of the United Nations System Mental Health and Well Being Strategy 2024 and Beyond, 19 to 21 June. In consultation with our managers comprising the Chief Executive Board (CEB) and mental health and well being experts we, the sister federations UNISERV - United Nations International Civil Servants' Federation, CCISUA and FICSA - Federation of International Civil Servants' Associations will be advocating for the implementation of policies and practices that ensure that staff wellbeing is paramount. We demand a workplace that guarantees staff sustainable maintenance and active support and insurance of mental health and well being. Anyone who reads my posts knows I am a passionate advocate for mental health and well-being because I suffer from mental illness. I have been provided with the tools to manage my mental illness which was incurred while I was working. I was held up, a gun pointed at me and a man (guardian Angel) literally wrestled with another man wanting to shoot me in order to protect me. The work that the staff we represent do is not easy. We work in conflict, post conflict and fragile states. When people say to me ‘what exactly does the UN bring to the table?’ I say what would the world be without the UN. The UN advocates for refugees, migrants and stateless people. The UN feeds, provides shelter, water and basic necessities in places that are impossible to enter. Human trafficking and abhorrent human behaviour, the UN tackles the elephant in the room in high level fora and facilitates, mediates and is the honest broker for difficult conversations. The UN collates, acts as a repository, develops and disseminates best practices for the overall human, environmental, climatic, animal, technological and all things that impact humanity’s ability to live on this planet and thrive. I could go on. This work, the development of best practices and advocacy at all levels from the grassroots to the General Assembly where Presidents gather - that’s many flawed and passionate individuals like Wadzanai upholding the basic tenants of human rights. In order to help me advocate for your mental health and well-being please list below areas of concern about your mental well-being. Give me the topics you would like me to speak about on your behalf. I need data and lived experience because I want staff to have the best possible working environment in order that they can do their best work. We at FICSA have ZERO TOLERANCE FOR TOXIC WORKPLACES! Help your staff representatives advocate for you in the best way by taking your voices and experiences and amplifying the best practices possible to ensure our mental well being. Flood your staff associations with the lived experiences of staff to ensure we get the best possible workplace no matter how difficult the situation and subject matter staff are tackling.

At the I.I.M.U.N. Championship 2024, we had the privilege of hearing from Anand Satyanand, former Governor-General of New Zealand, Rosalia Arteaga, former President of Ecuador, and Rosa Otunbayeva, former President of Kyrgyzstan, in a segment moderated by Dr. Shashi Tharoor where they engaged in a discussion on building a roadmap to promote the concept of a global village. Here are a few key lessons we learned during the session: 1. Communication has globalized the world: With the advancement of technology, communication has broken down barriers, connecting people across continents in real-time. This interconnectedness has made the world smaller, creating opportunities for cultural exchange, collaboration, and shared progress. 2. We should strive to live in peace and harmony: A peaceful and harmonious life fosters mutual respect and understanding, reducing conflicts in society. Embracing peace within and around us helps build stronger, more compassionate communities. 3. Educate, agitate, organize: Knowledge empowers individuals to question injustices and take action. By learning, raising awareness, and organizing efforts, people can create meaningful social change. 4. Show respect to everyone: Respecting others, regardless of background or beliefs, fosters inclusivity and empathy. It forms the foundation of healthy relationships and promotes unity in diversity. 5. Social media fosters a sense of a global community: Social media bridges distances, enabling individuals to share experiences and ideas instantly. This constant connectivity creates a digital global village, where borders blur, and communities unite over common interests.

One of the project asesstment criteria in ORiZON EUROPE funding is the number of events organized, including online events. The issue is that many of the events are just for events, but no audience participates. This is how money is being wasted same as time.
