🌟 Celebrating Health and Safety at Work: A Nod to Rehabilitation and Return to Work 🌟 This past weekend marked the annual Day for Health and Safety at Work, a time to reflect on the importance of maintaining a secure and healthy work environment. As someone deeply involved in recruiting both Rehabilitation Consultants and Rehabilitation Counsellors, I see first-hand the critical role that safety plays not just in prevention, but in recovery and return to work. Rehabilitation Consultants and Counsellors are at the forefront of bridging the gap between recovery and resuming professional life, whether it’s from physical injuries or psychological impacts. Their work ensures that returning to work is not just about getting back to the office or the site but returning with confidence and the support needed to thrive. Here are a few insights on how a focus on safety can streamline the return to work process: 1) Preventive Measures: Effective safety protocols reduce the risk of injuries, lessening the need for prolonged rehabilitation periods. 2) Early Intervention: Quick response from employers about rehabilitation options can accelerate recovery and reduce the impact of injuries. 3) Tailored Recovery Plans: Customised return-to-work programs by skilled consultants can address the unique needs of each individual, promoting quicker integration and productivity. Let’s take the learnings from this year’s Day for Health and Safety at Work to reinforce our commitment to not just prevent harm but to also champion the cause of recovery, making sure every employee returns to work empowered and supported. #HealthAndSafety #WorkplaceWellness #RehabilitationConsultants #RehabilitationCounsellors #ReturnToWork

Is Assisted Living Locators a part of your Employee Assistance Program (EAP)? If not, why not consider it? For employees in the "sandwich generation," balancing work and caregiving can be overwhelming, leading to higher stress, absenteeism, and even turnover. By incorporating Assisted Living Locators, your company can offer them real, practical help while strengthening their engagement and productivity at work. Plus, our advisors are available to attend health fairs and give on-site presentations, giving employees direct access to essential resources and guidance. This local, hands-on approach makes it easier for employees to manage their caregiving roles, stay focused, and feel supported. Supporting your employees in their personal lives ultimately builds a healthier, more resilient workplace. Why not add this impactful service to your EAP? This time of year, which can be simultaneously very joyful due to celebrations and family gatherings, but also painful for people experiencing loss, grief, or family conflict, making it a time that can feel both happy and sad depending on individual circumstances. “Anything that's human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable” is a quote by Fred Rogers, who often shared it in his speeches. To me this quote means talking about difficult feelings can make them less scary, upsetting, and overwhelming. Please be reminded to use your company's Employee Assistance Program (EAP). An EAP gives access to confidential support services offered through your employer’s benefits package. An EAP can include things like short-term counseling, referrals to outside resources, or consultations regarding personal or work-related issues you might be facing, all at no cost to you. You can typically access these services by calling a dedicated phone number provided by your company's HR department.

Thanks to Angela Goeppner for reminding us about this useful general resource from SAMHSA on EAPs (2023). It provides an overview of employee assistance program services, provider types (internal staff, external vendor or hybrid of both), costs and benefits and issues in selecting a provider. It cites the 62-page 2009 EASNA report I wrote with others on how to select or strengthen an EAP. Employers may also want to consider my article from last year featuring the results of a recent survey of EAP industry professionals that has data on which specific kinds of modern services define full-service EAP providers. It has a quiz for employers to score their EAP and learn where it is in a range from Full-service to Imposter. Some newer vendors focus mostly on individual self-care tools from digital apps and online counseling services for employees while ignoring the workplace and organizational level services that define the Core Technology of EAP and that require having staff with more experience and expertise. Supporting crisis events and managing employees or family members with substance misuse problems also are specialties to look for in an EAP. Attridge, M. (2023). EAP Evidence: What services define real EAPs? - Results of employee assistance industry global survey. Journal of Employee Assistance, 53(4), 24-27. https://lnkd.in/gs8NzUKz Attridge, M., Amaral, T., Bjornson, T., Goplerud, E., Herlihy, P., McPherson, T., Paul R., Routledge, S., Sharar, D., Stephenson, D., & Teems, L. (2009). Selecting and strengthening Employee Assistance Programs: A purchaser’s guide. (62 pages). Washington, DC: Employee Assistance Society of North America. https://lnkd.in/dA9KThR SAMHSA does offer EAP Prescription Drug Toolkit (from 2020): https://lnkd.in/g3UjEwtM
The information in this article from SAMHSA about Employee Assistance Programs is worth the quick read, in particular the “Selecting an EAP” section which gives direction to companies in the market for an EAP. Food for thought as many of us are wrapping up 2024 and looking to our goals, strategies and EA program goals in 2025.
