In today's digital age, many young people are questioning the relevance of libraries. However, libraries offer far more than just physical books. They serve as vibrant community hubs, providing a welcoming space for people to connect, learn, and grow. Libraries are also therapeutic environments that foster a sense of calm and focus. They are treasure troves of 'resource people' – knowledgeable librarians, experts who can guide patrons in their quest for knowledge as well as bright and brilliant people. Interestingly, numerous individuals who lacked formal education have credited libraries with playing a transformative role in their lives. These testimonials underscore the critical importance of libraries in empowering people and bridging the knowledge gap. By providing inclusive access to information, libraries continue to be a beacon of hope and opportunity in our increasingly digital world. This is an impromptu video, just a glimpse of what a library can do. 🎥MC YUNGPROH

A Frightening Vision of Perpetual Censorship Project 2025 is a blueprint for a future where the suppression of ideas and the erosion of freedom are not just possibilities but policies. It is filled with rhetoric that vilifies librarians, educators, and authors, branding them as criminals simply for providing diverse perspectives in their storytelling. The plan advocates for criminal charges against those who present books that some find objectionable, darkly transforming America’s libraries from places of learning and inquiry into ones of fear and repression. If Project 2025 comes to pass, Banned Books Week, which now serves as a once-a-year reminder of the fragility of our freedoms, will become a grim daily reality. The restrictive measures proposed would force educators and librarians to constantly second-guess every book on their shelves, every lesson plan, and every conversation, knowing that any misstep could lead to severe consequences. #bannedbookweek #freedomtoread

📚 "Library 2035" - A visionary glimpse into the future 📖 Have you ever wondered what libraries might look like in the years to come? Sandra Hirsh's captivating book, "Library 2035," offers a compelling exploration of this very question. 🔭 I recently finished reading "Library 2035" by Sandra Hirsh, a collection of essays envisioning the future of libraries. It was an insightful and thought-provoking read that left me feeling optimistic about the role libraries can play in the years ahead. Hirsh has artfully curated a collection of essays that boldly reimagine the library's role in the face of ever-evolving challenges. 💡 One essay that particularly resonated with me was the contribution by Miguel Figueroa and Lessa Kanani'opua Pelayo-Lozada. They emphasised the importance of actively listening to the needs of our communities and library staff. 👂 True progress hinges on our willingness to embrace diverse perspectives, respect differing viewpoints, and actively seek insights from those at the forefront of change – be they librarians, interns, volunteers, or patrons themselves. 🤝 By fostering an environment of open dialogue and genuine curiosity, libraries can better adapt to serve their communities. Building a strong, cohesive team and being receptive to diverse viewpoints is crucial for meeting the demands of the future. 🌊 In addition to the essays, there are webcasts further exploring themes around the library of the future: https://lnkd.in/dyAmn4ah 🎧 Overall, I found "Library 2035" to be an engaging and inspiring read. It prompted me to reflect on the vital role libraries play and how a commitment to listening can help shape dynamic, community-driven institutions going forward. I would highly recommend this book! 📚✨ #Libraries #LibraryFuture #LibraryInnovation

On this National Library Day, we’re celebrating the power of reading and the vital role libraries play in promoting literacy and fostering connections. LeVar Burton’s insightful quote reminds us that amidst the distractions of modern life, reading offers a sanctuary—a space where we can escape, explore, and connect with ourselves and others on a deeper level. Libraries open the doors to endless possibilities, offering a vast array of books, resources, and knowledge waiting to be discovered. From fiction to nonfiction, poetry to prose, libraries provide a treasure trove of stories and ideas that inspire imagination and curiosity. In a world that often feels disconnected, reading brings us together. Whether through book clubs, author events, or community programs, libraries create spaces for people to come together, share ideas, and forge meaningful connections. Reading is a bridge that spans cultures, generations, and experiences, fostering empathy and understanding. Reading is a lifelong journey—one that begins in childhood and continues throughout our lives. Libraries play a crucial role in nurturing a love of reading from an early age, providing access to books and resources that spark curiosity and ignite imaginations. By instilling a passion for reading, libraries set the foundation for a lifetime of learning and growth. This National Library Day, Novel Education Group celebrates the transformative power of reading and expresses gratitude for the invaluable role libraries play in our communities. Whether you’re diving into a new novel, revisiting an old favorite, or exploring the shelves of your local library, take a moment to cherish the magic of storytelling and the joy of discovery. #NationalLibraryDay #Reading #Literacy #LibraryLove #NovelEducationGroup

Reading for pleasure is highly correlated with increased literacy rates. Unfortunately, declining rates of reading for pleasure are currently reported around the world. What can be done to arrest this alarming slide? One action is for schools to prioritise well stocked libraries and provide teacher librarians who can motivate students to develop a life long love of reading. #literacy #reading #readingmotivation #schoollibraries
Most year 4 students said they had good access to libraries but close to half didn't borrow regularly, 13% 'never or almost never' borrowed books, and 7% of students were in schools that didn't allow library books to go home, our new Snapshot of PIRLS 2021 shows. Senior Research Fellow Kylie Hillman has analysed library use and reading comprehension for thousands of Australian primary students.
